Story
David Strorm's father doesn't approve of Angus Morton's unusually large horses, calling them blasphemies against nature. Little does he realise that his own son, his niece Rosalind and their friends have their own secret aberration that would label them as mutants. But as David and Rosalind grow older it becomes more difficult to conceal their differences from the village elders. Soon they face a choice: wait for eventual discovery or flee to the terrifying and mutable Badland....

Story
The media have descended on Garrett Island, a small, isolated community that is the setting of a visionary experiment. All the residents’ cars were sent to the mainland and for the past month the islanders have been “driving” the Arrival, a revolutionary autonomous vehicle. With a simple voice command, an Arrival will take you wherever you want to go and, because the fleet is networked and aware of one another, car travel is now 100% safe. The future, it seems, has arrived.

Great premise but poor execution
Reviewed: 03-17-24
The premise here is great... autonomous robots (cars) gone wild. Unfortunately this story doesn't work. In every chapter and every story line, the plot goes from obvious to possible to over the top to ridiculous. If that happened a few times I could look past it, but it was constant, from the "capabilities" the cars to incredible capabilities, recoveries and intellects of the humans. Even the "twist" late in the book, which I did not see coming, could have been good but completely jumped the shark. If you like the premise then read Kill Decision by Daniel Suarez for an example of how robots can plausibly develop intelligence, and heroes with plausible capabilities.

solid teamwork assessment method

This was well done. It's not the most unique, as there are plenty of teamwork assessment tools out there. I think this will resonate with some people and it's definitely useful.

Interesting take on the time travel story

This was very well done. The characters were interesting and I was invested in them. There was an interesting twist about 2/3 of the way through, but it carried through to the ending.

With Earth rapidly becoming inhospitable to human life, GS Archean carries a one-way crew of courageous passengers to Uelara, an Earth-like planet in the Cieri star system. Uelara is ideal, except for one minor detail - its distance from Earth. Traveling at sub-light speed, the generation ship won’t reach Uelara within the original crew’s lifetime. Eager to reach Uelara, the second-gen crew prepares, as planned, to assume their parents’ responsibilities - that is, until someone goes missing and a devastating secret is discovered, putting the future of the human race in jeopardy.
