The way this was written didn't flow smoothly. It was very first book'ish in presentation, amateurish. The narrator was the same. I don't know if it was her cadence or just the way the book read because of the way it was written. I didn't finish it. Got to Chapter 19 but didn't care enough about the story or the characters to continue.

Story
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

I LOVED this book!!! Ray Porter did an INCREDIBLE job with narration. 10 STARS! The book itself was so enjoyable. Sometimes the physics was over my head as it was first explained, but things were all made understandable by description or dialogue. It wasn't so sciencey that I lost interest. It made me laugh and some happy tears. DEFINITELY RECOMMEND! Looking forward to the movie and how they pull it off. Will absolutely look for more books narrated by Ray Porter. I'll be reading more books by Andy Weir too.

LOVE The Thursday Murder Club!
Reviewed: 11-16-24
I really like Fiona Shaw, and think she'd make a wonderful Elizabeth in the movie. A little disappointed that she isn't playing that role. (Although Helen Mirren will be great too.) However, Lesley Manville was a much better narrator. She did a FANTASTIC job on the first two books. This 3rd book wasn't as enjoyable as the first two because I was used to Lesley Manville and her voiced characters. She did a better job with the different voices. Sometimes I wasn't sure who was speaking in this version. She definitely did better with Bogdan's voice.
I very much enjoyed the story! It's smart, funny, endearing, and interesting. I like the new characters and the growth of the established gang. I really like that there aren't any teenagers in it and no teenage angst. Everyone is likable (even the "villians") and relatable to a certain degree. I don't know any spies, but I'd like to think they'd behave this way. The mystery keeps me guessing to the end. I enjoy Richard Osman's books so much, I'm following him, reading them all, and buying/recommending them to/for friends.

Love the Magical Cats
Reviewed: 09-07-24
Owen and Hercules are sleuths! They help solve murders, but in "believable" cat ways. They don't verbally speak and aren't snarky as so many tedious cat tales. They're clever with catatude. The stories are light, enjoyable characters. Wouldn't it be wonderful if all small towns were like Maysville where artsy people got along, helped each other, and the town diner did gourmet fair. The protagonist asks herself self-doubting or simplified questions that seem to be required in "cozy mysteries" to move the story along, but not so frequently to be overly annoying. The stories often keep me guessing whodunit. The narrator can be a little flat, especially with Marcus, but does a good job overall. The author does a good job when talking about TNR and community cats. Spay & neuter people! The series is enjoyable.

Reviewed: 04-25-24
The narrator, James Marsters, does a FANTASTIC JOB! He adds so much to these stories. He does great voices (male & female) and accents. His timing is spot on. It's obvious he's read the books prior to recording the narration. Marsters is a huge reason I'm enjoying one book after the other. Other narrators should take heed and study his work. There are plenty of other reasons to enjoy this series. There's humor, magic, and action. The stories are well paced. The characters are very likeable, even the villains. Sure, there's some annoying hero takes all the blame for something happening even when he tried to stop the person. But evidently this is a protagonist story requirement in sci-fi / fantasy hero genre. Harry isn't a superhero. He's a guy with regular flaws that don't drag down the story (no angst or unbeatable addictions) that has extra abilities and a desire to get better at his craft and be a better person.

I read this series a while ago. I loved it then. Charlaine Harris writing style is so good in this series. Better than more recent works. I was surprised at how much better this book was than her current two series - which I enjoyed before listening to this book. But I wouldn't rave about them like this one. The Narrator, Johanna Parker, does a FANTASTIC job! I'm going to start following her. When I first read this series, I didn't "get" the vampire story fad at the time. After reading this, I understood the attraction. Enjoy!
