Thoughts….
Reviewed: 02-18-25
I’m disappointed in the increasing number of narrators who are incapable of carrying off a foreign accent. Sigh…
The story was amazing, waaay better than I would’ve ever anticipated! Really pulled in by both characters. A unique take on a work of historical fiction, and sadly, I’m suspect events that happened frequently. I thought character development was interesting.
That said, here’s what happened (from my point of view). I’m reading this incredible, captivating, intriguing, edge-of-your-seat book for the first 30 chapters….then in the last hour or so, it got *insanely* annoying with religion, praying, faith….blah blah. I suddenly felt as if I’d gone to a faith revival. Like, where did that come from?? I felt it was totally inappropriate, and shoved in as some last minute idea. Couldn’t take it!

Story
As the war begins, Hanna Rombauer, a young German woman, is sent to live with her aunt and uncle after her mother’s death. Thrown into a life of luxury she never expected, Hanna soon finds herself unwillingly matched with an SS officer twenty years her senior. The independence that her mother lovingly fostered in her is considered highly inappropriate as the future wife of an up-and-coming officer and she is sent to a “bride school.” There, in a posh villa on the outskirts of town, Hanna is taught how to be a “proper” German wife.

Painful narration
Reviewed: 02-03-25
I’m not sure why narrators that were unable to carry off a German accent were used. It almost made me return the book but I knew the story would be interesting (& it was). My one and only negative about the story/characters is that Tilde’s husband was so annoying. At one point in the book, I just fast forwarded because he was completely getting on my nerves

Great author and narrator but…
Reviewed: 01-07-25
It was a disappointing book in comparison to some of the author’s other books. Adelaide made me absolutely insane. Is anyone really that stupid & naive?? I also felt like there was too much ridiculously predictable “boy meets girl”. The overall storyline is very good and I like the author but too much that was annoying. The narrator is excellent, as usual!

The Gardener Estate is one of the most storied and beloved places on the West Coast: a magnificent house in vast formal grounds, home to a family that shaped California—and fought hard to conceal the turmoil and eccentricities within their walls. And now, just as the turmoil seems buried and the Estate prepares to move into a new future, construction work unearths a grim relic of the estate's history: a skull, hidden away some fifty years ago.

I found the characters to be irritating, predictable, and abrasive right from the start. I usually try to give books a chance, but no-can-do with this one. IDK what Laurie King was thinking. She's usually an awesome author. Too bad

I wouldn’t have expected to like this series, but I’m really enjoying it. That said, the “side story” with Mary and Henry was just too ridiculously hokey and corny for me. Hard to listen to because IMO, it was so nonsensical.
Otherwise a good mystery/adventure and very good narration

I’ve always liked this narrator, but with this book I realized just how AMAZING he is! Quick changes between British, American, and Australian without a flaw….wow! As always, I love Lennox’s character, but for some reason, the other characters were tiresome to me, and the story a letdown. I’m sure it’s just a preference thing. I love the series as a whole, and look forward to the next book
