About this listen

This is DC Smith's third investigation with the Diver and Diver Associates agency. They have been asked by a member of Norfolk's aristocracy to look into the tragic death of her younger brother, Freddie, the late Lord Thorpe of the title. The inquest verdict was of misadventure, but it isn't long before Smith begins to suspect there has been a serious miscarriage of justice.

It was exciting without a whole lot of “action” scenes, and I listened to the whole thing almost right through in one go. It was one of my favorite in this series, and I honestly think the preview summary did not do it justice, as I wasn’t expecting it to be very interesting. It has inspired me to go back through the series once more. Love it and I hope the DC and Kings Lake series go on forever.

Loved the storyline

Is there a sequel planned for this?!? There were a lot of loose ends and no real resolve to the death

Good story great characters. Narration as always, excellent

Sometimes this guy drives me crazy the way he talks but I love him. He’s annoying but of course smarter and wittier than everyone else. I’ve read every one of these stories and listened to them all as well, and this is one of my favorite characters next to the ones created by the jockey mystery writer Dick Francis. They are all the best kind of common man yet hero always with Superman character like qualities not of the fantasy kind but really, if you think about, a perfect person, that I think we all need to believe in. There is a good amount of gorgeous scenery and dogs, which is why it’s up there second to my fav right now. Not enough horses though to make it surpass my number one mystery writer. 😄

I really like it but also the English intellectuals kind of make me laugh so that’s always my favorite character in mysteries.

I am struggling to finish this. The story and characters are far too “cute”. And the narration is becoming so slow and deliberate that I had to speed it up. I’ve listened to all previous DC Smith books and enjoyed the low stress, picturesque, but informative storytelling. This is overdoing it completely, far too picturesque and “lovely”. The narration makes it worse.

Struggling to finish - too cutesy

There are times I just don't want it to end and that desire competes with needing to hear the final outcome. This is one of those...so well written and performed, I laugh out loud at his dry wit and am so pleased by how former characters are drawn in. Smith hasn't missed a beat moving from Kings Lake station to private practice. This did not disappoint. 😁

I have listened to the whole series and feel like I am hanging out with comfortable friends as I listen to each new installment. I love the slower pace, the narrator, and the plots, which are always so interesting! Looking forward to the next…

Always excellent!

I felt sad when the message ending the story came across.

I'm going back and re-listening to the earlier books, hoping a new one will be available sooner rather than a long lapse.

What a remarkable story, how human the characters became. Glancing up on the screen, I see the book ran over 14 hours.
Impossible to believe that now that it's concluded.

Savor this as you would something you enjoy. It's eloquent, sensitive, dramatic and fearful,
The narrator MUST NEVER BE REPLACED. I loved the narration as I did the facets of this novel.
What a find this series is. It is not geared for a particular gender.
My only suggestion, is to begin with book #1, come to know the characters as they'll become your friend.

Perfection on all levels
