A fun way to organize the material

using the final farewell tour as a framing device, this gives Elton the ability to reminisce about past concerts and moments in his life as he was in some of those cities throughout his career. The short little book gives a lot of insight to him as a person, and highlights a number of the humanitarian efforts that he's been part of. He's one of the few that really deserves the bigger than life legacy that he's created!

Story
First published in 1843, it tells the story of Ebenezer Scrooge, a mean and unpleasant man who dislikes people generally and Christmas especially. One Christmas Eve he is visited by the ghost of his former business partner Jacob Marley and the spirits of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come and given a glimpse of the many homes and lives which Scrooge has touched in his wretched life to date. After their visits, Scrooge is transformed into a kinder, gentler man.

Great narration of one of the greatest stories ever!
Reviewed: 12-28-24
Hugh Grant did an excellent job on this. I've only known him from his films, but he's got a wonderful reading voice and got a good variety into the characters. The story speaks for itself, and I don't know if they'll ever be it's like!

Story
Christmas is the single biggest annual event on the planet, a time for merry-making, over-indulgence, peace, goodwill, and the occasional family row. It’s as comfortable and familiar as a pair of old shoes and yet still glittery and exciting. But what do you really know about it? It’s stuffed full of traditions and rituals that most of us have been observing all our lives without having the slightest idea of where they come from.

Not much that hasn't been written dozens of times before
Reviewed: 11-22-23
I'm sure the name of Bill Bryson will get listeners to download this, and it's not that it's bad at all, but the style and the content has been done so many times before. overall, it follows the general, "you thought this was true about Christmas/ Santa / Nativity, etc, but in fact..." Again, not bad in itself, but just basically runs down a list of things to debunk about Christmas legends.

This is pretty different than anything I had read of Zelazny before, but I just loved it! an excellent Halloween addition to some of the classic books, and a real treat for classic Universal monster fans as well as Lovecraft addicts!

I've listened to 4 or 5 audio versions of Dracula, this is by far my favorite! I only wish they would upgrade/fix the hiss on the audio. Sounds like this was sourced from the cassette copy, maybe.

Story
In 525 BC, the Persian king Cambyses sent 50,000 soldiers across the conquered Egyptian desert to take an oasis city not far from where the Libyan border stands today. According to Greek history, a hurricane-force sandstorm struck near the end of their 600-mile trek. The army - all 50,000 men - vanished without a single trace. Fast forward to 1986. A British archaeological team, sent to the edge of the Great Sand Sea to exhume evidence of the incident, has also gone missing.

story is grear, would prefer a different reader
Reviewed: 07-26-22
The story is a good one, and well paced. I just can't get into the narrator though. his normal reading voice is fine, but his characters are a little hard to listen to, especially the voice he affects for Hellboy. sounds a little cartoony, almost like a character off of Family Guy. this is, of course, subjective for everybody, but it's just not the delivery I would have picked for this character.

Classic book, but narrator is mis-matched
Reviewed: 02-09-22
Foster's book is a classic that should be read and re-read many times. I was happy to find an audio version, but I think the narrator is not a good fit for this. He's an excellent reader, but the tone and pacing just feels better suited to a book on business management or technology trends. Obviously it's a subjective thing, but listen to the sample before buying.

Story
Piranesi lives in the House. Perhaps he always has. In his notebooks, day after day, he makes a clear and careful record of its wonders: the labyrinth of halls, the thousands upon thousands of statues, the tides that thunder up staircases, the clouds that move in slow procession through the upper halls. On Tuesdays and Fridays Piranesi sees his friend, the Other. At other times he brings tributes of food to the Dead. But mostly, he is alone.

In Piranesi, she's built another wonderful and fascinating world, and by the end of it, I'm ready to start it again! Wonderful narration as well!

Ensign Andrew Dahl has just been assigned to the Universal Union Capital Ship Intrepid, flagship of the Universal Union since the year 2456. Life couldn’t be better…until Andrew begins to pick up on the facts that (1) every Away Mission involves some kind of lethal confrontation with alien forces; (2) the ship’s captain, its chief science officer, and the handsome Lieutenant Kerensky always survive these confrontations; and (3) at least one low-ranked crew member is, sadly, always killed.
