Surprisingly complex

The story is told through different perspectives so I felt like I understood the inner thoughts of many of the characters and had empathy for them - even though some of them were unlikable. I was expecting a fun mystery and was pleasantly surprised by many of the deeper themes like generational dynamics and classism.

Story
Nora Noone’s father was many things to many people. To the public he was a self-made titan of industry, whose luxury boutique hotels were among the most coveted destinations in the world. To his three ex-wives, he was a loving yet distant family man who managed to keep his finances—and his families—separate. But, to Nora, he was always a mystery—especially after his suspicious death at his cliffside home.

Story
After Lucy is found wandering the streets, covered in her best friend Savvy’s blood, everyone thinks she is a murderer. Savvy was the social butterfly loved by all, and if you believe the rumors, especially popular with the men in town. It’s been years since that horrible night, a night Lucy can’t remember anything about, and she has since moved to LA and started a new life.

It’s the opening night of The Manor, the newest and hottest luxury resort, and no expense, small or large, has been spared. The infinity pool sparkles; the “Manor Mule” cocktail (grapefruit, ginger, vodka, and a dash of CBD oil) is being poured with a heavy hand. Everyone is wearing linen.

The time jumps were a bit hard to keep track of at first but after a few chapters it made sense. Time jumps aren’t always my favorite but it never came off as cheesy or heavy-handed. Julia Whelan did a fabulous job narrating the story (as usual) and I thoroughly enjoyed getting caught up in the story.

A successful film professor and podcaster, Bodie Kane is content to forget her past—the family tragedy that marred her adolescence, her four largely miserable years at a New Hampshire boarding school, and the murder of her former roommate, Thalia Keith, in the spring of their senior year. Though the circumstances surrounding Thalia’s death and the conviction of the school’s athletic trainer, Omar Evans, are hotly debated online, Bodie prefers—needs—to let sleeping dogs lie.

Story sort of fizzled out
Reviewed: 12-31-23
The premise was so intriguing and the style of flashbacks was so effective; I loved how the protagonist walked through the different murder scenarios and who could be a suspect … and then the story just fizzled and was incredibly unsatisfying. I thought the commentary on real life events and how violence against women is reported on was incorporated really well into the story through the inner musings of the protagonist. But that ending… an ending can be realistic without feeling so dissatisfactory.
Excellent narration from Julia Whelan - as usual.
