About this listen

An instant New York Times bestseller from the author of The Last Thing He Told Me

“Dave’s signature blend of twisty mystery, family drama, and moving love story is top-notch” (The Boston Globe) in this instant New York Times bestseller where estranged siblings chase a fifty-year-old family secret that shaped their father’s mysterious life—and death…

“Pulse pounding suspense and moving family drama” —People

“A master storyteller. You won’t want to miss this one.” —Harlan Coben

“The perfect mix of heart-pounding and heartfelt…Dave delivers yet another suspenseful page-turner that should be a book club staple for a long time to come.” —New York Post

Nora Noone’s father was many things to many people. To the public he was a self-made titan of industry, whose luxury boutique hotels were among the most coveted destinations in the world. To his three ex-wives, he was a loving yet distant family man who managed to keep his finances—and his families—separate. But, to Nora, he was always a mystery—especially after his suspicious death at his cliffside home.

Though the authorities insist there was no foul play, Nora and her estranged brother, Sam, believe otherwise. As they form an uneasy alliance to unpack the mystery, they start putting together the pieces of their father’s past and uncover a family secret that changes everything.

The Night We Lost Him is a “propulsive” (Oprah Daily) must-hear, with a heartbreaking final twist you’ll never see coming.

gorgeous - could not stop listening

Laura Dave is one of my favorite authors and this is her best novel yet. It's a mystery about a family patriarch's suspicious death, but its so much more.

Rich character development and a heartbreaking love story--and you will never see the twist coming.

Julia Whelan is perfect here. I couldn't love this pairing more.

I loved this book!!!

I love all of Laura Dave’s books. This did not disappoint. I finished it in one day. Could not put it down. A three tissue ending. Narration was, as usual, amazing. Julia Whelan is my favorite!!!🌞

Amazing!!!

I was a little hesitant about LD’s latest release because I absolutely loved The Last Thing He Told Me. But this book is just as phenomenal. Similarities are a fierce loyalty to family even tho at times things appear quite toxic. The other similarity to TLTHTM is the powerful and all encompassing romantic love. There is significant tragedy, grief and disassociation but also compassion, genuine love, and understanding. Character development was flawless and the plot was truly masterful in gripping the reader and drawing them in deeply.

Narration was excellent. Full emotional range for all the characters. Clear distinct voices for each of the characters portrayed!!

Relationship Heavy

This was a great read, but definitely felt less like a thriller and more like a story about strained-family relationships and changing as we grow older.

Loved the narrator

I thought the story was predictable. Whelan is my favorite narrator and made the listen more enjoyable

Absolutely perfect.

WOW! This is my favorite from her yet and in the top 2 books I’ve read all year. I rarely actually do a review but this one is worth your credit and then some. The narrator makes this story come alive. Such a beautiful story of the meshing of grief and love.

I will listen to anything narrated by Julia Whelan

I have listened to other Laura Dave books and the narration was so horrible, I almost didn’t finish the book, but when Julia Whelan is narrating, she simply makes the book better. I enjoyed the mystery and did not figure it out which is unusual. I would recommend.

Surprising

Let me begin by saying, this would have gotten a 5 star rating just because Julia Whelan is narrating. But the story itself was very good, and it is very well written. I thought this was going to be a thriller, but while it involves a murder and mystery, it is really more of a romance. The flashbacks are a little confusing, but come together perfectly in the end. I liked it a lot.

Love v. Loyalty

Liked the family dynamics - I did guess the culprit, but… hooked for the ending written

It’s was okay

Story line felt a little dull definitely not on my must read list. Performance isn’t bad but again, kind of dull.
