About this listen

An instant New York Times bestseller from the author of The Last Thing He Told Me

“Dave’s signature blend of twisty mystery, family drama, and moving love story is top-notch” (The Boston Globe) in this instant New York Times bestseller where estranged siblings chase a fifty-year-old family secret that shaped their father’s mysterious life—and death…

“Pulse pounding suspense and moving family drama” —People

“A master storyteller. You won’t want to miss this one.” —Harlan Coben

“The perfect mix of heart-pounding and heartfelt…Dave delivers yet another suspenseful page-turner that should be a book club staple for a long time to come.” —New York Post

Nora Noone’s father was many things to many people. To the public he was a self-made titan of industry, whose luxury boutique hotels were among the most coveted destinations in the world. To his three ex-wives, he was a loving yet distant family man who managed to keep his finances—and his families—separate. But, to Nora, he was always a mystery—especially after his suspicious death at his cliffside home.

Though the authorities insist there was no foul play, Nora and her estranged brother, Sam, believe otherwise. As they form an uneasy alliance to unpack the mystery, they start putting together the pieces of their father’s past and uncover a family secret that changes everything.

The Night We Lost Him is a “propulsive” (Oprah Daily) must-hear, with a heartbreaking final twist you’ll never see coming.

Liked the family dynamics - I did guess the culprit, but… hooked for the ending written

Love v. Loyalty

I thought this book was well written and kept my interest. Agree with another reviewer that is wasn’t quite a mystery but more about the family. That said, I really enjoyed the story. And you can’t go wrong with Julia Whelan. She’s always terrific!

Great story

Something about this book floored me. Love is hard and yet, so worth it. This book reminds you. Thank you Laura Dave. It was beyond good and good for the soul.

So so good

Story line felt a little dull definitely not on my must read list. Performance isn’t bad but again, kind of dull.

It’s was okay

The book ended and I thought, “that it?” I was a little bored most of the time but pushed through for a good ending, only to be bored with that as well.

Underwhelming

It was well-narrated as well as well-written. Although the story is about types of people I'm unfamiliar with (upper class, serially married and divorced, and ambitious), I found the relationships interesting.

The author's descriptions of the various characters shown through their emotionsal responses.

I enjoyed guessing whodunnit and was entertained. I wasn't really wowed or surprised by anything hence the 4 stars and because it's a bit unrelatable of a story for most people but isn't that why we love fiction?! Give a try!

Worth a listen!

I listen to most anything Julia Whelan reads and this book held my interest but the ending was unsatisfying for me. The “resolution” left me with to many unexplained questions and didn’t really add up. The characters seemed happier at the end but a lot of the why or background isn’t really explained. I have loved other Laura Dave books so I’ll just chalk this up to “ok” but not a total miss.

Holes in story bothered me
