Story
Rachel Maddow, host of the #1 hits “Bag Man” and “Rachel Maddow Presents: Ultra,” is back at the mic with a new original series, “Rachel Maddow Presents: Déjà News.” In each episode, Rachel and co-host Isaac-Davy Aronson seek a deeper understanding of a story in today's headlines by asking: Has anything like this ever happened before? Would knowing that help us grapple with what’s happening now… and what might happen next?

Amazing as Always
Reviewed: 07-30-23
As always, Rachel tells a story in ways that leave me thinking. Her connecting of current political situations to those in the past is necessary because we forget so easily. More than forgetting though, we really don't know what we are not taught. So thank you, Rachel and your amazing team of researchers and producers for educating us!

Story
On the surface, it appears as if Zari Woods has achieved everything she set out to accomplish: fame, money, a supportive best friend, and loving parents. But to a person on the neurodiverse spectrum, a loving woman is elusive. When Frankie moves into her neighborhood, Zari starts her final quest, a happily ever after. Frankie is beautiful, kind, and seems to genuinely enjoy spending time with Zari despite her quirks. Unfortunately, Frankie already has a girlfriend. Sort of. It’s complicated.

This novel has made it into my top five favorites. I love the main characters, especially since one is on the autism spectrum and so beautifully depicted. I love that both women's voices are revealed and balanced. Great read.

My Favorite Story
Reviewed: 09-01-21
This is one of my favorite love stories, read by my very favorite narrator. A win win. It is adventure, set in a world that has enough references to this world but so much more fantastical. Aurora, who has been traumatized by the brutal loss of her father, maintains her humanity even as she seeks revenge for his senseless murder. When Aurora rescues Evie from a cage that would have delivered her to same fate as her (Aurora's) father's, the two women find a safe place in each other. Passionate and poignant, this is an awesome read.

Brilliant depiction of a flawed main character who evokes tremendous empathy. So difficult to do successfully. Natalya Tsvetnenko is a paid assassin who falls in love with her mark and chooses to protect her instead of completing the job. An epic love story.
And ... the narrator is wonderful. she made the story come alive.

I was particularly interested in this novel because it picked up on characters from my favorite Jenny Frame novel, Unexpected. But it was really hard to listen. Even if I weren't so used to having Nicola Victoria Vincent reading Ms Frame's novels, I would still hate the narration. The accent sounded so fake and jarring it spoilt it for me.
