About this listen

Is it possible to be so much alike that you're completely incompatible? Tess and Sidney have both committed the greatest online dating faux pas possible: uploading old pictures. When the two tough butches meet at a small town bar, they think they're getting the femmes of their dreams.

So begins the awkward - yet sordid - acquaintance of the only two lesbians in town. Local rancher Tess doesn't have time for women who aren't her type, and new-girl-in-town Sidney isn't interested in someone who only sees her as a piece of fresh meat.

Yet they keep bumping into each other...is it fate, or just small-town karma?

A bad date turns into a one-night stand. A one-night stand turns into a casual relationship. A casual relationship becomes Sidney's greatest amusement, and Tess's biggest nightmare as she's slowly forced out of the closet in conservative River Rock.

Desperate times are afoot in the sleepy, gossipy hamlet of rural America. It's going to take more than nerves of steel to survive the isolationism and people with nothing better to do than ruin their neighbors' lives.

It's going to take a whole lotta introspection - and love.

How do you describe a small town of less than 500 folks. Homophobia ran rampant and it was fine. Had lots of laughs.

Small town fun

Sidney had just moved to town to live in an historical society house and was in the bar to meet the only other lesbian in town. When Tess walked in and the bar tender greeted her Sidney knew the game was up. They were both dykes looking for the femme in their dated online photo. Can this go anywhere but down? Erotic romance and story.

I received a free copy of this audiobook in exchange for an unbiased review.

Desperate Times is not the typical FF romance that I would go for, but I quickly found myself engrossed in the story. Tess and Sidney are two butch lesbians living in a very conservative ranching town. The two meet through an online dating service where both of them have posted less than accurate information about themselves. Despite both looking for more fem partners, they know that the pool of lesbians in the area is slim, to say the least. So they agree to become bedroom buddies. Over time, their relationship grows to more than just sex and they fall in love.

I found Sidney to be much less butch than Tess, making the story feel more like a traditional FF love story. There were still flashes of dominance in her, but she definitely fit more of the role of the fem girlfriend. I found the story was paced very well and the sex scenes were hot, hot, hot!

Marie Smith was a wonderful narrator for this story and made it enjoyable to listen to and even laugh at from time to time. It is definitely one I would listen to again.

Very enjoyable love story

I'd never listen to a book by Hildred Billings but gave Desperate Times a try.
I loved how the characters were very real. and that they were not your typical blonde kcock- outs. these characters had flaws. and were butch. I haven't found a lot of books on them.
The story starts off at a bar at their first meeting. where none of them look anything like the profile pictures they use on the online dating site they met on.
there are parts in the book, where Tessa needs her butt kicked, but to me that's what made it real.
Marie smith did a great job narrating this book. and I would listen to her again.

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

I really enjoyed this audiobook. great story of the only 2 lesbians in a small town who sort of hook up even though they're both butch and both wanted more girly girls... there was humor and sex and horse riding and more sex. the characters were great - even the cowboy with the quick temper and limited vocabulary. Narrator was great. overall, very good!

very enjoyable!

So, this was my first time reading a butch for butch title and though I wasn't quite expecting it, I really enjoyed it. The humor through sarcasm throughout was an added bonus. Living in a city where one has the pick of the litter, I can only imagine how desperate one might become moving to a small, country town where the pickings are just shy of non-existent. I will say, this helped to better understand the switch dynamic and how difficult it can be at times for two type A women to come together. I loved Sidney but I think Tess was my favorite because she evolved the most as she overcame some personal and very public struggles. All in all, I would definitely recommend this book.

Saddle up for a good read.

This is my first book by this Author & Narrator. With that said I have to say I was very surprised!
I LOVED THIS BOOK!
I ushually only listen to Craden & Prince & always lesbian/lgbtq genres. This book was Awesome! Steamy, funny, and still had serious moments. the plot was different then the ushual lesbian romance. This has more sex scenes then most which I like yet offers something different in the plot which is refreshing! Im sick of the ushual "old flame returns home after 20yrs & falls back in love blah blah!" So if you want different then give this book a try! Its definitely worth it! & has more then a few sex scenes ;) I will definitely be looking for more titles by this Author! A Great Book! A Welcomed Change! A New Outlook! & A Perfect Fit for Narrator! P.s.- The only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is well..honestly....
I love Craden & Prince!

When I initially read the blurb and then some reviews I was hesitant to listen to this story. I freaking loved the story. These two women butt heads constantly, but I find it adorable. Tess can be frustrating but given where she lives it's understandable. Sidney doesn't mind switching it up if that's what it takes. Both women learn to compromise and see things from the other's perspective. I am so glad I picked up this audiobook. Hildred Billings is always making me open my eyes to new things .Marie Smith was a wonderful narrator for the story.
