Very lovable characters
Reviewed: 03-07-25
What stood out most? I love these characters, the push, the pull, the tension and the joy. What made this better than ‘the usual’ was full, immediate communications. Too many authors rely heavily on ‘failure to communicate’ for suspense. It was refreshing that these characters did not second guess themselves or get sidetracked. I didn’t once feel compelled to rant “just tell him!!!”

Smarting from her recently canceled wedding and about to turn forty, Laurie Sassalyn returns to her Maine hometown of Calcasset to handle the estate of her great-aunt Dot, a spirited adventurer who lived to be ninety-three. Alongside boxes of Polaroids and pottery, a mysterious wooden duck shows up at the bottom of a cedar chest. Laurie’s curiosity is piqued, especially after she finds a love letter to the never-married Dot that ends with the line “And anyway, if you’re ever desperate, there are always ducks, darling.”

Great story but I don’t like it.

I think she is the perfect example of ‘cutting off her nose to spite her face’. She is half living two lives because she can; it’s her choice. I’m left hoping she will realize, before it’s too late, that she can choose to live one, full life without having to admit that she might just be too stubborn for her own good. I live alone but I am not lonely. I get that part. But I would never deprive myself of a relationship I know I want to prove that I’m not wrong being happy on my own. The saddest part is the constant allusion to things… see these things… the accumulation of all these things are proof of a happy life!! NO! They are not!

Tristan Stiles is the bane of my existence. He never wears a shirt. We can’t seem to stop fighting. He’s an arrogant playboy with a filthy reputation. Sure, I had a crush on him when I was fourteen but that was a long time ago. I know better than to trust him. I just need to survive long enough to find a new job and get a new place. And not accidentally let Tristan show me exactly how well-deserved his reputation is.

I have thoroughly enjoyed many HH romances but…
Reviewed: 09-14-24
…this one feels like too much. Not much story left after you remove the sex. Maximizing the sex minimizes character and story development. Adding more sex and trying to keep it from getting boring has led to scenes that skirt a bit too close to disgusting for my taste. This is not typical of HH. I hope it’s not a trend. Please leave something to my imagination!

I had a hard time getting to the end
Reviewed: 08-16-24
I usually like Marian Keyes’ works. This one disappointed me. I’d like to say it was because there are too many characters and I had a hard time getting invested in a favorite. However, the trouble for me is that I truly didn’t like any of them. I wanted to see where they each ended up but had no preference for happy or unhappy endings. Nothing made me hopeful.

Story
Ava thinks love should be found in the real world, not on apps that filter men by height, job, or astrological sign. She believes in feelings, not algorithms. So after a recent breakup and dating app debacle, she decides to put love on hold and escapes to a remote writers' retreat in coastal Italy. At the retreat, she's not allowed to use her real name or reveal any personal information. When the neighboring martial arts retreat is canceled and a few of its attendees join their small writing community, Ava, now going by "Aria", meets "Dutch", a man who seems too good to be true.

I listened all the way to the end because I hoped Matt would somehow escape. I did not like Ava at all. She was a self absorbed child. She spouted grand ideas about learning, accepting and adjusting but only expected Matt to do all that. She knew her life was superior so expected Matt to gladly become part of it. The travelogues near the end were lovely. Too bad they in no way represented the story preceding them. The relationship was like watching a fully loaded freight train derails in slow motion.

Romantic suspense?
Reviewed: 04-28-24
This was half story and half explaining the story. There was some suspense. The premise was exciting but… no one is safe until we get Medina. Duh, duh, duh, Medina is dead. No story to it. Just the mention. We need to save the farmers… we saved the farmers. Yay. Once the conflict is resolved there are still two hours left. A little boring, less than tantalizing, romance. I couldn’t bother with the rest of the series even though it was free.
My main issue with the reader was that she frequently ended sentences before they ended and then hurriedly tacked on the ends. Also, maybe it’s just me but, I found her to be annoyingly breathy all the time.

How can an intelligent, talented woman be so emotionally stunted? I kept waiting for her to show some growth but she just got more ridiculous. All the second guessing, over thinking and analyzing minutia was exhausting. Sucked the life out of a great storyline.

… if writing is your profession your technical skills should be excellent. It is too obvious that the author or her editor make liberal use of the thesaurus (or AI?) without checking connotations or verifying suitability. Sorry, currents may substitute for streams as a noun, but never as a verb. Just the worst of many instances.
