About this listen

From the number one New York Times best-selling author of I Owe You One, an utterly delightful novel about a woman who ditches her dating app for a writer's retreat in Italy - only to find that real love comes with its own filters.

Call Ava romantic, but she thinks love should be found in the real world, not on apps that filter men by height, job, or astrological sign. She believes in feelings, not algorithms. So after a recent breakup and dating app debacle, she decides to put love on hold and escapes to a remote writers' retreat in coastal Italy. She's determined to finish writing the novel she's been fantasizing about, even though it means leaving her close-knit group of friends and her precious dog, Harold, behind.

At the retreat, she's not allowed to use her real name or reveal any personal information. When the neighboring martial arts retreat is canceled and a few of its attendees join their small writing community, Ava, now going by "Aria". meets "Dutch", a man who seems too good to be true. The two embark on a baggage-free, whirlwind love affair, cliff-jumping into gem-colored Mediterranean waters and exploring the splendor of the Italian coast. Things seem to be perfect for Aria and Dutch.

But then their real identities - Ava and Matt - must return to London. As their fantasy starts to fade, they discover just how different their personal worlds are. From food choices to annoying habits to sauna etiquette...are they compatible in anything? And then there's the prickly situation with Matt's ex-girlfriend, who isn't too eager to let him go. As one mishap follows another, it seems while they love each other, they just can't love each other's lives. Can they reconcile their differences to find one life together?

Hilarious!

The perfect tongue in cheek narrative that gets us to laugh at ourselves as we laugh at the characters in Kinsella’s book.

Typical storyline and kind of boring

Typical storyline of kind of boring. Some of it was just depressing and long-winded.
Obviously, it was a nice ending

It was really cute

I liked the book a lot! Sophie Kinsella has always been one of my favorite authors. I didn’t love this one as much as her others, but it was still a wonderful book.

Disappointed

my first Kinsella read. I concluded I am not a member of her target audience. Dear Reader, the characters and plots just did not engage me.

Oh, Harold!

I’m a big Sophie Kinsella fan, but as I get older, I start cringing when the young heroines make boneheaded moves. Lots of funny situations to get me through! But Harold was the best character in the book! Go Harold!

Love her books, not so much this one

Usually, I adore her books. Laugh out loud funny and characters I can relate to. But this one was “meh.” It’s like she pulled out the usual formula from her desk drawer but didn’t put in the effort for amazing twists, turns, and gasping-cringe-worthy moments the other books have. It’s not bad (well, the glaring use of a few awkward and lazy adverbs was- like, “she looked at him bewilderingly.”) But that’s just me. I won’t give up on this author, but she needs to not just “phone it in” the next time.

Character growth

The main character bothered me a little, however I was happy to see the character growth in the novel. I think it portrayed some important parts of relationships.

Of course there’s a happy ending

But how she tells the story is the best and most unexpected aspect. It brightened my day.
