Why so many 5 star reviews?
Reviewed: 02-13-25
I bought this title on sale after reading all the excellent reviews. It was described as having such wonderful characters and great humor. Well, there was zero humor, it was not definitely not funny. It was quite boring actually.
I am glad I finished though, because the end was ok. Just ok.

Story
Tom, my husband, is always watching, controlling my every move. He chooses my clothes, my hairstyle, even instructing what and how much I’m allowed to eat – just ten measly mouthfuls. I’ve become isolated from those I love, forbidden to work and stuck at home to fulfil his every whim. My identity along with my life is long gone. I am slowly suffocating but I know Tom will never, ever let me leave alive. A chance encounter with Savannah changes everything. Tom couldn’t tear his eyes away from her. Could she be my saviour?

Bad. Just really bad story.

This book started with such promise of a terrific psychological thriller. But as it went along, the characters kept getting stupider and stupider and so very unlikable. The sex which was overdone and over described was just sleazy and gross. Husband was described as charming, yet no ounce of charm in his performance, and no other characters liked him either. Main character Chloe must have been mentally disabled, because every decision she made was made with no common sense. I was hoping for a great grand finale ending. But, it was pretty mundane and blah..

Maybe this is just not my genre, but I found this story quite dull. I kept waiting for something big, but it just ever so slowwwwly unraveled into a forgetful story.
The narration was just ok. Who doesn’t love Meryl Streeps sweet smiling voice? But there were too many characters for her to give different voices to, and Maizy ended up with a manish voice that was cringe worthy.
I know I am in the minority, but I am quite astonished at all the excellent reviews….

Great story, but bad dialogue
Reviewed: 04-10-24
This story was so great and imaginative, but it was difficult to get past the characters vulgar words. Had the vulgarity been saved for the love scenes, it would have made the characters classier. Regardless, I ended up loving the story. It would make a fun movie!

Being a huge Ruth Ware fan, I was so excited to read another of her books. And disappointed I was not! This could possibly be my favorite story that she has written. It was mysterious and exciting suspenseful. I just absolutely love love love the characters. I’m so sad that it had to end and I have to wait for another book to be written…

I cannot understand all the raving reviews. I found the narrator so very annoying. Her voice seems full of angst and rebellion. It is like constantly listening to a teenager whine.
I couldn’t keep up with each woman character from chapter to chapter because they all sounded the same, with exception of the Aussie girl who had the very worst Australian accent I’ve ever heard.
This story should’ve been done with several different narrators. There are a lot of characters, and unless you have an amazingly skilled reader, the story is lost. This narrator is not only not skilled, but not even listenable. It’s sad, this story might be the greatest but I’ll never know it.i

Dark. Unlikable characters.
Reviewed: 08-04-23
I love books when I feel a connection with a character(s). This story had no one to root for. They were all unlikable, waste of human beings. As so many other reviews noted, very confusing story line. I didn’t feel as if actions had meaning, except maybe to showcase a dark mind. The end is terrible, unbelievable, and truly makes no sense whatsoever. I am pleased that the book was free and no credit was wasted. But I will never get back this wasted time…

Her beauty almost certainly saved her from the rising Nazi party and led to marriage with an Austrian arms dealer. Underestimated in everything else, she overheard the Third Reich's plans while at her husband's side, understanding more than anyone would guess. She devised a plan to flee in disguise from their castle, and the whirlwind escape landed her in Hollywood. She became Hedy Lamarr, screen star.

Hedy, a brilliant woman
Reviewed: 07-01-23
There were so many facets in this book, each could have been a book of its own. It told a story of how , an innocent girl was drawn into a marriage with a powerful man and then abused and imprisoned. The book captured how beauty opened doors but kept her from being perceived as intelligent. Finally, and most importantly, small minded men made a decision to not use a life-saving invention because it was not created by a man but by a woman who was beautiful and famous. The book was an excellent read.
