About this listen

New York Times bestselling author Ruth Ware proves that she is the “new Agatha Christie” (Air Mail) with this adrenaline-fueled thriller about a woman in a race to clear her name and find her husband’s murderer.

Hired by companies to break into buildings and hack security systems, Jack and her husband, Gabe, are the best penetration specialists in the business. But after a routine assignment goes horribly wrong, Jack arrives home to find her husband dead. To add to her despair, the police are closing in on their suspect—her.

Suddenly on the run and quickly running out of options, Jack must decide who she can trust as she circles closer to the real killer in this unputdownable and heart-pounding mystery that combines Mr. and Mrs. Smith with The Fugitive from an author whose “propulsive prose keeps readers on the hook and refuses to let anyone off until all has been revealed” (Shelf Awareness).

Ugh

Story was too far fetched and the reader was anguished the entire book. I wanted to quit listening several times.

Excessive Emoting

It took 8 chapters for the MC to go through the immediate loss of her. husband. The rest of the book was “How can I go on? I must go on! I can’t do this alone! I’m dying from my wound, but I must go on! I’ll run five miles and jump from too many feet in the air to possibly make it - but I do, because I must go on, despite not being able to go on…”
I don’t know if it was the narrator’s emoting or the author’s writing that left this impression with me.
I ended up skipping to the last two chapters without feeling like I missed anything.

Oh my….

Wow! This was another great book written by Ruth Ware and excellent narration by Imogen Church. I found myself holding my breath on occasion wondering if the main character was going to get caught. The other times, I was sad and got choked up when she would share with the listener how she was feeling. Waiting for the next Ruth Ware book.

Get to the story already

This is my first Ruth Ware book and I found it to be a slog. The author is clearly gifted when it comes to description, but after six chapters, I don’t feel like I’ve learned anything aside from the initial mystery set up. I can’t recommend this book. It seems like her other novels are more highly rated and more entertaining.

Very good listen, spoilers in review.

I loved the story, the performance was great, but the injury to the main and its effect in every scene felt too early. We had to hear about the ache, the burning, the pain for 80 percent of the story. We knew she was septic right away, and yet, after all those days, recovered from sepsis in a few days, baby intact. I loved the story line, loved the hero who was strong despite all the trauma, but it felt like we were dealing with a superhero at times. She is resourceful, determined, and human, I felt like it got out of touch with reality too early.

Dynamic duo

I love every book from Ruth Ware and will add this to the pile. The reading from Imogen Church was excellent as well! The story was engaging and complex- which kept me in the story with the characters.

My favorite Ruth Ware yet!

So sad it’s over! Imogen Church is one of my favorite narrators and she didn’t disappoint.

Perfect pairing Ware and Church

Thank you for creating this story that breathes life and love into the character of Jac. If the breath belongs to Ware the voice of Jac is all Church. ! A dynamic duo if ever there was one!

Nice break from "remember that awful thing we did as teens?!?"

I'd taken a break from reading Ruth Ware books because I could o longer bare watching adult lives fall apart because of bad choices made as youths.
Engaging, good pace, nice twists!
