Story
Amber wakes up in a hospital. She can't move. She can't speak. She can't open her eyes. She can hear everyone around her, but they have no idea. Amber doesn't remember what happened, but she has a suspicion her husband had something to do with it. Alternating between her paralyzed present, the week before her accident, and a series of childhood diaries from 20 years ago, this brilliant psychological thriller asks: Is something really a lie if you believe it's the truth?

Volume inconsistencies make it hard to listen to
Reviewed: 06-18-25
The story itself is engaging (3.5 rounded down) but the audiobook is very difficult to listen to because, while the read itself is lovely, the volume is very uneven. If I put it at a comfortable level for the secondary characters then I can’t make out what the protagonist is saying. If it’s loud enough to hear the protagonist then it’ll like the other characters are shouting in my ear. I don’t recommend this for a headphone listen.

Story
Ever since my daughter Isa was born, I’ve been struggling. I can’t remember anything, and my brain is in a fog. So when my husband Ned suggests we hire a night nanny, I leap at the chance. As soon as she walks into our home, I feel a wave of relief. I smile at her and notice her eyes are the color of amethysts. A memory flashes across my brain, but before I can grasp it, it’s gone. But something isn’t right. Ned is acting strangely and every time I ask him why, he tells me I’m being paranoid.

Give me more postpartum/early motherhood years thrillers!!!! So fun!
Reviewed: 08-20-24
4.5 rounded up - there are definitely some stock characters in the cast and the mother didn't seem like a real person (she acted more in service of the plot than honestly) but it was gripping, excellently paced, and delicious. As a (somewhat) new mom, I can't resist fun stories set during the tumultuous postpartum period. I definitely recommend, this was a blast!

Because Ellie’s always hated me, ever since she realised it was no longer just her and Theo. Now she’s seventeen, beautiful and smart–smart enough to see through me. Domestic thriller at its best, perfect for fans of Gemma Rogers, Diane Saxon, Daniel Hurst, Shalini Boland.
Premise: Rowan finally has everything she ever wanted, the perfect life after a dark past. Theo is the perfect husband, her job is lucrative and fulfilling, and now she’s getting the last piece of the puzzle, a late-in-life baby. There’s only one problem: Ellie. Ellie is the stepdaughter from hell - spoiled, entitled, and out to get Rowan. The baby news is the tipping point for Ellie that pushes them out of their tenuous equilibrium, careening into domestic chaos…
I listened to the audiobook, narrated by Melanie Crowley, who does an incredible job with the text. This is a one episode listen, in that you absolutely won’t be able to bring yourself to hit pause! It’s sooooo good and I was on the edge of my (proverbial, since audiobooks = getting to do errands simultaneously) seat.
Thanks, Bookouture, for the audio ARC in exchange for an honest review!

Lucinda Berry is usually so great, so I was disappointed not to like this one much! The cast were duds. They had an intriguing premise to work with, but the husband was a jerk and the wife/protagonist was a wilting daisy with the communication skills of a toddler.
