When the body of a famous television academic is discovered in Greenwich Park, carefully positioned beside a megalithic stone fountain and missing a hand, DI Declan Walsh and the team of the Last Chance Saloon find themselves not only involved in a case that connects to the supernatural, but one that also involves seventeenth-century architects, ley lines, nuclear reactors, and a secret, black market organization that specializes in particular occult items; some that date all the way back to Aleister Crowley, Dr. John Dee himself, and connected to a missing treasure.

Very good narrator, interesting story I initially thought less than believable. Funny though as the weirdo’s seem to be running the asylum these days because they are so deluded maybe not so unbelievable.

The ritual murder of a prostitute named Ada McKinley in a bedroom on decrepit Pentecost Alley would ordinarily occasion no stir in Victoria's great metropolis. But under the victim's body the police find a Hellfire Club badge inscribed with the name Finlay Fitzjames - a name that instantly draws Superintendent Thomas Pitt into the case. Finlay's father - immensely wealthy, powerful, and dangerous - refuses to consider the possibility that his son has been in Ada McKinley's bed.

The narrator is so slow I’ve had to speed it up on Audible. The story is so contrived as to be ridiculous. I like these books generally but as the series goes on it is becoming too long and too nonsensical.

I am duplicating another reviewer by my title. It started out well enough but began to drag until I couldn’t stand it any longer. Skipped to the end which was ridiculous. If it wasn’t for my book club I wouldn’t have bothered.
I will say the narrator did a good job; I don’t know how she stuck with this material.

Story
"And see if there's any news about the missing girl." Life, as Smith used to say, is just one thing after another - as one investigation ends, a new one begins. But for reasons unknown to the rest of her team, DCI Cara Freeman will be haunted by the next case for the Kings Lake Central murder squad. They find themselves delving into the seamy side of life in the town, and one of their number will have departed before this new investigation is over. Perhaps Detective Sergeant Chris Waters should have seen it coming, but he has a lot more than work on his mind these days.
