About this listen

"And see if there's any news about the missing girl."

Life, as Smith used to say, is just one thing after another - as one investigation ends, a new one begins. But for reasons unknown to the rest of her team, DCI Cara Freeman will be haunted by the next case for the Kings Lake Central murder squad. They find themselves delving into the seamy side of life in the town, and one of their number will have departed before this new investigation is over. Perhaps Detective Sergeant Chris Waters should have seen it coming, but he has a lot more than work on his mind these days.

really very good

because of it's close focus on character this novel really does transcend the genre. I don't know where I'd place it exactly among Grainger's work but it has to be near the top. it has such a confident pace with the police work been so cleverly matched to what we find out about motive. Jackson's narration exactly brings out the exactness of the words. Such a fine performance.

Compassionate, smart, clever police procedural

This author shines in this book. Best to start with the first Kings Lake series, as you will find yourself developing a relationship over time with these evolving people. The story of the investigation is enthralling, but what is particularly distinctive about this book, as in many of Peter Grainger's procedurals, is the deep compassion for the victim. I think this story actually broke my heart at the end. This author excels at showing how ordinary, sometimes quite un-admirable people are nevertheless deeply loved by their families. It is that love that gives meaning to the work of the detectives in the D.I. Smith series and in the Kings Lake series.

The narrator, Gildart Jackson, is the absolute perfect voice for this author's work. It's a voice that gets across the very deep feelings in play in an understated way that exactly suits the ethos of the series.

A Very Enjoyable Series

Glad to know that when DCI Smith retired, he didn't vanish from the series. His wit and institutional knowledge are still there, helping Waters and others solve crimes. it's interesting to get to know bits & pieces of DCI Freeman's backstory too.

Outstanding

Love the story and can't imagine a better reader. I have listened to all of Peter Grainger's books and sad this is the last available for now. The writing is superb as is the narration; these books are special.

He is an exceptional writer

Peter Grainger does not disappoint. His stories are well developed and do not resort to the shock factors that many other writers do. Grainger just writes believable stories without any gimmicks.

Police procedures with heart and humor, seriously.

Gildart Jackson performs Peter Grainger with spirit and grace, bringing out all the sentiments of a well-written line.

Great read!

I won’t lie, I do miss the DC Smith series but really still enjoy the King’s Lake gang and like the DC Smith cameos. I have so enjoyed Gildart Jackson’s narration, I have sought out other authors’ books just so I can have him read them to me. :-)

More pure delight

Still miss the constant presence of DC Smith in this series, but Freeman and Waters hold their own, nonetheless. Of course there are Grainger’s humor and plot twists in the wonderful weave of the fabric of this story which includes the surprise appearance of an issue plaguing human relations since the beginning of recorded history. And I don’t mean the world’s oldest profession, either. This is a case of seeing through the illusion of Maya.

Great Narrator!!!!

I have immensely enjoyed this series and the DC Smith series. Peter Grainger is one of my favorite writers, not only because his books are well written, but also because they are written with class!! Mr. Grainger doesn’t feel the need to fill up space with foul language. He takes the reader from scene to scene with such interesting and engaging storytelling. He’s detailed without being boring. He paints a clear picture so well that I can see each chapter as though I’m looking at a movie screen. And…The narrator is undoubtedly one of the best I’ve ever heard. The detail of voice and emotion with which he reads each character is absolutely incredible. Gildart Jackson is a credit to his profession!!
