Publisher's summary

"And see if there's any news about the missing girl."

Life, as Smith used to say, is just one thing after another - as one investigation ends, a new one begins. But for reasons unknown to the rest of her team, DCI Cara Freeman will be haunted by the next case for the Kings Lake Central murder squad. They find themselves delving into the seamy side of life in the town, and one of their number will have departed before this new investigation is over. Perhaps Detective Sergeant Chris Waters should have seen it coming, but he has a lot more than work on his mind these days.

A little off

We’ve listened to all P Grainger books. This story was more typical of the “regular “ crime stories out there: so many suspects and no determination till the end. His other books were a refreshing change in that the criminal was usually determined early on and then the task of proof. Also, the editing was not as “perfect” as the others and the audio often picked up in wrong spot or repeated a few lines. Still, I hope Peter Grainger writes another doom. We live his characters

Good but fatally flawed.

The writer is a great admirer of all things police and prison. Shame, otherwise a good procedural.

It's All Over

So sad to come to the end of the Kingsmill series. like the plots very much and the Reader is magnificent. A good combination for an Audible book. I hope there are more to come. Five stars.

These books are becoming my best friends!!

The characters, storylines, descriptive scenes, and of course the wry, intelligent humor, never disappoint. As sad as I am to come to the ending - I’m always excited to begin the next.

Great series-I hope it continues

I wasn’t sure if I would enjoy the same characters w/out DC Smith in the storylines. I do! It’s still so good! I love Peter Grainger’s writing style & the cleverness of the cases. The characters are becoming more well rounded & interesting. There’s some Smith sprinkled in here & there, for good measure. I definitely recommend this series for those of you who loved the DC Smith books.

Such an enjoyable read

The characters, the language, the lack of cursing. One can write a book using expressive words if one has a vocabulary.

Chris Waters

I enjoy this series but miss DC Smith terribly. Please bring him back! Maybe part time...

Another winner

Grainger not only tells a good story and makes the ordinary something astonishing but his observations and characterisation are superb. And Guildart's performance is, as always, just amazing.

really very good

because of it's close focus on character this novel really does transcend the genre. I don't know where I'd place it exactly among Grainger's work but it has to be near the top. it has such a confident pace with the police work been so cleverly matched to what we find out about motive. Jackson's narration exactly brings out the exactness of the words. Such a fine performance.
