Not as good as the first
Reviewed: 04-29-24
I enjoyed the story, I love everything to do with the faery world created by Holly Black. But I didn’t enjoy this book as much as the first. I liked that we got to see things from Oaks perspective, but I enjoyed Wren’s character so much more. I found his character more difficult to identify with (I am not a spoilt fairy prince). I also found the performance to have less connection and emotion than the voice actor who played Wren. I am looking forward to seeing what happens next in the Undersea!

This is one of the best books I have ever read. Holly Black is a brilliant writer. Her storytelling lifts the veil to the magical realm. Her characters are edgy but relatable. I love that you hear the story from several characters points of view.

Story
After a startling betrayal ends with both Sera and the dangerously seductive ruler of the Shadowlands she has fallen madly in love with being held captive by the false King of the Gods, there is only one thing that can free Nyktos and prevent the forces of the Shadowlands from invading Dalos and igniting a War of Primals. Convincing Kolis won’t be easy, though–not even with a lifetime of training.

Too much repetitive self reflection
Reviewed: 11-22-23
I did enjoy listening to this book because I love the series and plot in general, BUT this book seemed like 90% of it was just Sara reflecting on her situation. It seemed like the same issues just worded slightly differently, over and over again. The book felt really long and really slow due to this repetitive self reflection. Don’t get me wrong, the plot and performance are fantastic but I would have liked more plot and things to move faster. The other issue I had was that she had spent her entire life training to be what the primal of death wanted, but then was incredibly shit at it. Over and over she did the opposite of what she knew Colas would want. She was true to herself which is great, but it seemed highly unrealistic that after all that training she couldn’t do it. Overall definitely worth a listen.

Awful

I didn’t even finish this book. The character Lia is so annoying - I just couldn’t listen to her whining. Firstly she puts herself and her own happiness above an entire kingdom of people, but she does this whilst ripping her friend from her life and putting her in danger. She puts everyone in danger without seeming to care. Then 2 strangers show up…together? Why were the prince and the assassin together? Maybe I missed that part. It was so boring that I tuned out. Or maybe you find out later in the book, I only made it to chapter 10. The immaturity of the characters shows this is a story for teens. Wish I’d known that before I wasted credits on it.

It’s okay
Reviewed: 06-13-23
I did enjoy it, even glad I listened to it. But it was okay when it so easily could have been fantastic - it has missed the mark. I don’t think the narration suited the story (it wasn’t bad just didn’t gel), then in some places the story took forever when nothing was happening but raced through the super important missions? The romance was super cheesy and I don’t think I can handle reading the next book and hearing ‘fated love’ etc one more time. WE GET IT. Saying the same thing 700 times in different ways doesn’t add anything to the story. The story building and world was really enjoyable and what really carried it for me. I
