Just hours after humans are born, the gods take what little power we have. In return, they protect our borders from the vicious, merciless fae. The humans who manage to keep their power are known as the corrupt. And they are burned. When my forbidden power is discovered, I’m forced to flee my tiny village and the life I adore. Fae games will change you . . . but their love will ruin you. At least, that's what my mother told me. My mother had three rules: 1. Never make a bargain with a fairy. 2. Never enter the Waywoods on a hunting day. 3. Never give the High Fae princes a reason to notice you. But even when I followed all the rules, the royal fae still took my family from me. So in one night I broke all three rules, and brought the kingdom to their knees.

Story
There are three rules to surviving the Fae—and I'm about to break every single one. Rule #1. Never cross into Faerie. When I'm chased across the wicked border and caught by its reclusive ruler of the sky, the pretty trickster with a clever tongue offers me a deal. Rule #2: Never bargain with a Fae. But I don't have a choice. For thirteen days, I have to survive in his mountainous maze of sinister paths, deceptive stairways, and devious creatures. Refuse, and my sisters will suffer as punishment. Rule #3: Never fall for the enemy. I should have known my sexy captor wouldn't play fair.

Story
Zach, Poppy, and Alice have been friends forever. And for almost as long, they’ve been playing one continuous, ever-changing game of pirates and thieves, mermaids and warriors. Ruling over all is the Great Queen, a bone-china doll cursing those who displease her. But they are in middle school now. Zach’s father pushes him to give up make-believe, and Zach quits the game. Their friendship might be over, until Poppy declares she’s been having dreams about the Queen - and the ghost of a girl who will not rest until the bone-china doll is buried in her empty grave.

Story
In the kingdom of Sempera, time is currency - extracted from blood, bound to iron, and consumed to add time to one's own lifespan. The rich aristocracy, like the Gerlings, tax the poor to the hilt, extending their own lives by centuries. No one resents the Gerlings more than Jules Ember. A decade ago, she and her father were servants at Everless, the Gerlings' palatial estate, until a fateful accident forced them to flee in the dead of night.

Story
In publishing-speak, here's what we at the LQ office sometimes describe as the Queer lovechild of Sholem Aleichem and Philip Roth: Uriel the angel and Little Ash (short for Ashmedai) are the only two supernatural creatures in their shtetl (which is so tiny, it doesn't have a name other than Shtetl). The angel and the demon have been studying together for centuries, but pogroms and the search for a new life have drawn all the young people from their village to America. When one of those young emigrants goes missing, Uriel and Little Ash set off to find her.

Story
Everyone dreams of marrying a prince - except for me. I am nothing more than a pawn in my adoptive mother's diabolical plot against the seven kingdoms. I was the chosen tool, her sharpened blade that would cut the deepest into the heart of the kingdom of Baist. But like all deadly weapons, my wedding is two-edged sword that could cost me my soul. For I am Rosalie, one of the adopted daughters of Lady Eville, and it is my duty to enter into a loveless and hate-filled marriage with the narcissistic Crown Prince of Baist.

I love the accent she gave him even if her voice did make him sound a little girly
The story was very good, very traditional cruel and tricky fae which was a good difference from some fae in books where they only have hearts of gold. I like Kaye, and I love Roiben.

Good story, poor narration
I found the narrator to be very boring and lackluster which is a shame because I really love these books. Roiben sounds so much girlier than Kaye and his random accent is incredibly distracting. It's too bad really.

worth the wait !!
i’ve been waiting for this amazing story to join its companions on audible for years — and I was not disappointed once it did, This book was the gateway into Faerie for me so many years ago; it remains among my favorites to this day, along with other works of Holly Black. How I missed Kaye & Roiben!

Such good dark fantasy
It’s been a long while since I read this book and listening to it again just reminded me how much I love the writing style and story telling I wish Holly Black would write some adult (spicy) fantasy but for a YA book this series is sooo enjoyable and worth a read/ listen.

Great read - excellent narrator!
I really enjoyed this book other than the F-bombs and language. If that doesn’t bother you then you will really enjoy reading this one. LOVED the narrator.

idk what else to say...
This was always one of my comfort books as a kid, and the first to introduce me to the Fae realm. Most of my books growing up came straight from the library and this one was magical in a way that I could always find it. No matter what library I was in. I've read it so many times before the interweb that I didn't realize there was more until years ago. at the old age of 32 and having the luxury (and ever waning ADHD attention span) of being able to buy audio books, I found this gem and a lot of other books from Holly Black.
ANYWAY, I suppose I would call this a classic based on the writing style, world building, and timeless themes our girly brought into this one because it's just as good at 32 as it was at 13.
Thank you, love. Tithe is a treasure to me.

I’m ensorcelled 🥰
This is one of the best books I have ever read. Holly Black is a brilliant writer. Her storytelling lifts the veil to the magical realm. Her characters are edgy but relatable. I love that you hear the story from several characters points of view.
