Story
Lewis Madigan is young, gay, out of work, and getting antsy when he’s roped into providing end-of-life care for his insufferable homophobic neighbor, Chester Wheeler. Lewis doesn’t need the aggravation, just the money. The only requirements: run errands, be on call, and put up with a miserable old churl no one else in Buffalo can bear. After exchanging barbs, bickering, baiting, and pushing buttons, Chester hits Lewis with the big ask. Lewis can’t say no to a dying wish.

Kristin Hannah's books are always good, and this was no exception. However, in 25 years as an audible member this is the first truly awful performance I have heard. I'd still recommend the book but be prepared for how poorly the book is performed.

At the end of the Second World War, Cyril Conroy combines luck and a single canny investment to begin an enormous real estate empire, propelling his family from poverty to enormous wealth. His first order of business is to buy the Dutch House, a lavish estate in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia. Meant as a surprise for his wife, the house sets in motion the undoing of everyone he loves. The story is told by Cyril’s son Danny, as he and his older sister, the brilliantly acerbic and self-assured Maeve, are exiled from the house where they grew up by their stepmother.

Story
One beautiful September day, three men convene on Martha's Vineyard, friends ever since meeting in college circa the 60s. They couldn't have been more different then, or even today - Lincoln's a commercial real estate broker, Teddy a tiny-press publisher, and Mickey a musician beyond his rockin' age. But each man holds his own secrets, in addition to the monumental mystery that none of them has ever stopped puzzling over since a Memorial Day weekend right here on the Vineyard in 1971: the disappearance of the woman each of them loved - Jacy Calloway.

When you listen to this book you understand both why the author received the Nobel Prize in Literature and why people are still reading the book nearly a century later. A wonderful story line with characters that will stay with you. Beautifully performed. Never a dull moment in the 40+ hours of listening.

Story
Divorced from his own wife and carrying on halfheartedly with another man's, saddled with a bum knee and friends who make enemies redundant, Sully now has one new problem to cope with: a long-estranged son who is in imminent danger of following in his father's footsteps. With its uproarious humor and a heart that embraces humanity's follies as well as its triumphs, Nobody's Fool, from Pulitzer Prize-winning author, Richard Russo, is storytelling at its most generous. Nobody’s Fool was made into a movie starring Paul Newman, Bruce Willis, Jessica Tandy, and Melody Griffith.

What about Julia Emelin’s performance did you like?
Some readers have been critical of Emelin's performance. As a 16-year member of Audible with more than 800 books in my Audible library, I place her among my favorite performers. How could this enchanting but dark story set in Eastern Europe long ago be read by anyone else. She is very easy to understand, and she places the story perfectly in the setting. I might have found her distracting reading a book like Goldfinch, but she is THE perfect reader for Uprooted!!

Simple yet captivating story
Reviewed: 05-22-15
I almost passed over this book because the premise seemed so simple. However from the first 5 minutes I could barely turn it off. The performance was excellent and the story had just enough unpredictable turns to keep my attention at a time when I was highly distractable. I expect I will remember it better than most of the 35-40 books I read and listen to each year.
