About this listen

The Grey sisters had only each other when their mother died years ago. Their father provided for them physically on Water's Edge, the ranch that had been in their family for three generations, each of them however, longed for their father's love.

Winona, the oldest, knew early on that she could never get it. An overweight dreamer and reader, she didn't exhibit the kinds of talents and strengths her father valued.

Vivi Anne, the youngest, had those things. And it was Vivi Anne who only ever saw a glimmer of their father's approval.

When Vivi Anne makes a fateful decision to follow her heart, rather than take the route of a dutiful daughter, events are set in motion that will test the love and loyalties of the Grey sisters.

With breathtaking pace and penetrating insight, Kristin Hannah's True Colors is a novel about sisters, vengeance, rivalry, betrayal - and ultimately, what it truly means to be a family.

Love the reader

If you could sum up True Colors in three words, what would they be?

reader makes story.

What other book might you compare True Colors to and why?

can't think of one.

What does Sandra Burr bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

she makes the characters alive and easy to distinguish by voice change.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Hated Winona in the beginning of the book, but understood more as the story unfolded

Any additional comments?

Not as good as her other book "The Nightingale" but was worth the read.

Dragged On

This was a story that never seemed to end. The sisters went back and forth between being close-knit and bitter enemies for far too long. I could not figure out if the nasty father figure was going to be implicated in wrong-doing or was just an emotional dwarf that added little to the story. The main character vacilated between being a whiny, self-pitying jerk and a strong protagonist for herself and her nephew. And I won't even bother about the silliness of all of the love angles for each of the sisters.

This is the first book of Kristin Hannah I have been disappointed with. Firefly Lane was wonderful. Winter's Garden was even better!! Mystic Lake has more solid literary interest than this book. I am not giving up on Hannah as her strong female characters make her a worthwhile author.

Great story and listen, despite the subpar narration.

I almost skipped this one because of some of the reviews regarding the narration. While I’ll admit that the narrator for this Kristin Hannah novel wasn’t amazing, I loved the story regardless. In typical Hannah fashion, she kept me hooked throughout. Give it a chance!

A story of a family you will not soon forget.

The first Kristin Hannah book I listened to was titled Alone, or something like that. I enjoyed it so much I listened to her book Nightingale next, which is arguably the very best novel about our allies in World War II that I had ever read or heard. So I selected True Colors next.
At first it seemed that True Colors had few of the complex relationship and societal issues that made the other two books so good. I was wrong. It takes this book a little while to get so good that you can’t put it down and stay up too late at night listening to it. It is a very good read, or listen in the case of Audible, and has a very good lengthy ending that I think will stay with me a long time. If you come from a family with personalities and issues that divide it, this book will give you hope, and maybe a little bit more courage, to love despite differences, and to never give up on your family.
Fortunately Kristin Hannah has written many novels that all have good reviews. I am looking forward to listening to the handful of her other books that are currently available on Audible.

Great story - stop focusing on narrator!

Unlike other reviewers I don’t care about the narrator’s voice. The beauty of audio books is to escape and be entertained while I continue about about my daily commutes, chores, etc. The book is great and will be enjoyed. Slow start so don’t let it fool you!

Consumed my life in the best way!

I love Kristen Hannah's writing! This story is so powerful. You're rooting for each one of these characters full heartedly. Very glad it has a happy ending!
