Story
For Alisa Brimley, editor of the small magazine Christian Voice, receiving a letter from a longtime subscriber might otherwise be a perfectly normal occasion—except Stella Rode, the reader in question, writes that her husband is planning to kill her. Brimley calls upon an old wartime friend to help her investigate: retired Circus spy, George Smiley. Before Smiley can begin, Rode is found murdered, and Brimley asks Smiley to venture to the small town of Carne, home of the elite Carne School where Rode's husband is a public school junior master.

Getting to like Simon Vance for the Smiley stories. This is another murder mystery not even dressed up as a spy story. But Quiet pensive George Smiley has his bit to do along with all the others.

Story
After an unremarkable interview, Circus agent George Smiley determines the subject of a standard security check—a civil servant in the Foreign Office named Samuel Fennan—poses no threat, nor presents any reason for suspicion of espionage. Hours later, Samuel Fennan is found dead by suicide. Suddenly finding himself under intense scrutiny, Smiley realizes the Circus intends to blame him for Fennan's death. Rather than remain idle, Smiley begins his own investigation into the nature of the man's demise.

Story
Dodge City, Kansas, is a place of legend. The town that started as a small military site exploded with the coming of the railroad, cattle drives, eager miners, settlers, and various entrepreneurs passing through to populate the expanding West. Before long Dodge City's streets were lined with saloons and brothels, and its populace was thick with gunmen, horse thieves, and desperadoes of every sort. By the 1870s, Dodge City was known as the most violent and turbulent town in the West.

It would be boring if it were not so riveting
Reviewed: 12-27-24
The author details account after account of good guys encountering bad guys throughout the west. The experience reminds the reader of something monotonous and repetitive. And yet, he will find him/herself compelled to persevere to the end. Mostly because the reader wants to find out how they all end up. When you choose the right subject(s) in non-fiction, this becomes the inevitable experience.

But now that he’s in the thick of it, trying to get through combat training harder than anything he could have imagined, he knows everyone in his unit is one bad move away from buying the farm in the interstellar war the Terran Federation is waging against the Arachnids. Because everyone in the Mobile Infantry fights. And if the training doesn’t kill you, the Bugs are more than ready to finish the job.

It's Heinlein. 'Nough Said.
Reviewed: 10-12-24
One of Heinlein's best. This version has a much more fitting narrator. I have both. This is Heinlein's one foray in to classic Military Science Fiction. Unlike so many other authors he gave us his best in one book and left it at that. Unfortunate that Hollywood didn't take that hint. The Sequels to the Starship Troopers Movie do not help the brand.
