About this listen

Only a year after its stunning victory at Talavera in July of 1809, Wellington's Peninsular Army, vastly outnumbered and its coffers empty, was on the brink of collapse. The Spanish government had fallen, the last Spanish armies had been crushed by the French, and all that was left were the peassants fighting the guerrilla, the "little war." But Wellington had one hope left. He knew that in the dangerous Portuguese hills lay a fortune in gold, enough gold perhaps to turn the Peninsular War around. And he knew of one fighting man capable of stealing it: Captain Richard Sharpe of the South Essex regiment.

In this novel, the third in a series that will take the magnetic Sharpe all the way from Talavera (Sharpe's Rifles) to the glory of Waterloo, Bernard Cornwell tells the gripping story of Sharpe's secret mission, an adventure unlike an form of warfare Sharpe has known in his long and embattled career as a soldier fighting his way up through the ranks.

Sharpe always come through. Enjoyed this as much as the others. always fun to get the historical perspective at the end.

another good one

This story consists of a singular adventure consisting of a treasure hunt in Spain by Trump and his men. Personally in prefer more battles, and while this one had some good skirmishes, it wasn't anything epic in scale. Davidson does a great job narrating, as ever.

More cloak and dagger for Sharpe and his company

I’m a huge fan of the last kingdom series, and I put off reading/listening to this series for years because I didn’t want to be disappointed, for nothing could be better or even equal to the last kingdom. Richard Sharpe does not disappoint!!! I think this may be the better of the two series. You decide!!!

Love the Sharpe series!

Where does Sharpe's Gold rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I think this Sharpe book is not quite as good as others in the series. The ending felt a bit rushed. I also don't like that the author didn't cover the gold at all in the historical note at the end of the book. I love Cornwell's historical notes and was let down in this instance. Did Wellesley really steal Spanish gold? I guess not.

It was a fun story overall and I enjoyed listening to Frederick Davidson as usual.

Ending a bit rushed

Loved it, every word and the performance was perfect. Would like to visit there one day and just look at the landscape and what's left of the City.

One of the best.

My first Captain Richard Sharpe book out of at least 10 that are written. This one takes place around 1810 and our protagonist is a Rifleman with the British Light Infantry. Their early war invention is colored pig bladders hoisted high on a large yardarm from a high tower to communicate some miles away to the next station. 1810 technology!

5 stars is great (I rarely give this rating).
4 stars is good (given only to interesting and well-written books).
3 stars is OK (the usual listen I encounter on Audible).
2 stars is poor (and not worth the credit or the listen).
1 star is awful (and to be diss'ed and shunned and spread as thus through out the Audible Universe)!
