I tried to give it a chance
Reviewed: 10-06-24
The metaphor/poetry usage and story idea was interesting enough I was willing to give it a chance beyond the immature soft porn and the climate catastrophe cliche. But it becomes completely unbearable (particularly in book 4) and now i wish I'd never wasted my money on any of it. The characters are so inconsistent except for Kenji, the comedy relief and consistently witty character.

I got too optimistic cause I'd heard someone say the series was good, and the first 3 books have some interesting twists, but it devolved around book 4 and now I'm stuck with books i already used credits on. so might as well warn people.

Somewhat disappointing

It at least had a fleshed out epilogue, but it was just too cliche, preachy in the wrong way, and had an anticlimactic ending. At least the narrator is pretty skilled.

Great until the very end
Reviewed: 08-10-23
The twist at the end is super cringe, but most of the book is pretty good. Even has some good realistic truths like the fact that even royalty answers to someone. No one in any society can just do whatever they want...unless maybe the worst sort of tyrant that has to be truly evil to keep their control.

Story
For five centuries, a witch's curse has bound the trolls to their city beneath the ruins of Forsaken Mountain. Time enough for their dark and nefarious magic to fade from human memory and into myth. But a prophesy has been spoken of a union with the power to set the trolls free, and when Ccile de Troyes is kidnapped and taken beneath the mountain, she learns there is far more to the myth of the trolls than she could have imagined.

Offensive beginning, but still good
Reviewed: 05-24-23
The beginning was pretty insulting and made me wonder if this was just another book with a terribly unlikeable author and/or main character, but the rest of the story was actually really good. Glad I stuck with it, and I will be buying the second book.

It's like 3 side stories loosely linked together by the main character's goal of finding family. But her family isn't even likeable and sides with even less likeable characters. The journey through this book feels mostly aimless because the small thread that binds is so unrewarding. At least the story is generally creative if abit convoluted.
As for the voice actor, I like the different voices, but it's like there was no prereading involved so the way things are said do not always fit the situation. Still, not too bad.

Story
My name is Opal Yong-ae, and I’m a Cleaner. At least, I used to be. Thanks to the supernatural bad luck that turns everything I do against me, these days I’m more of a walking disaster. Getting rid of this curse is the only way to get my life back. Unfortunately, dragon magic is every bit as sneaky and deadly as the monsters behind it, and just as hard to beat.

Complex characters (not just an outlet for daddy issues like i was starting to worry about with the first book), finally we get some cameos, and i very much enjoed the thoughtful concepts like customization vs standardization. I'll be waiting eagerly for book 3.

Story
The DFZ, the metropolis formerly known as Detroit, is the world’s most magical city with a population of nine million and zero public safety laws. That’s a lot of mages, cybernetically enhanced chrome heads, and mythical beasties who die, get into debt, and otherwise fail to pay their rent. When they can’t pay their bills, their stuff gets sold to the highest bidder. That’s when they call me. I’m a Cleaner: a freelance mage employed by the DFZ to sort through the mountains of magical junk people leave behind. It’s not a pretty job, or a safe one....

So far not as good as the adventure i started when i read Nice Dragons Finish Last, but still really good. I just don't identify with and admire the main characters as much, but they still make sense, it's very well written, the pacing is very good, and there are enough interesting turn of events that you want to keep reading. Even when it's over so im glad for book 2. Especially considering this author seems to get even better with each book in a series. Im just hoping for more dragons, gods, and a thought provoking big picture as the story continues. On to book 2!

Audie Award, Fantasy, 2016. As the smallest dragon in the Heartstriker clan, Julius survives by a simple code: keep quiet, don't cause trouble, and stay out of the way of bigger dragons. But this meek behavior doesn't fly in a family of ambitious magical predators, and his mother, Bethesda the Heartstriker, has finally reached the end of her patience.

A thoughtful, exciting series from start to end
Reviewed: 02-05-20
This book was the start of a great and obviously well thought out series. The plot twists, philosophical concepts, and dynamic characters made it difficult to stop listening, and while i don't want to spoil anything big, if you like the complexity that a prophet/seer brings, this will not disapoint. I read each one as they came out and now I'm happy to recommend the book that started it all!
