Publisher's summary

Life in the magical mess of the Detroit Free Zone is never easy. When you’re laboring under the curse of a certain prideful, overbearing dragon, it can be down right impossible.

My name is Opal Yong-ae, and I’m a Cleaner. At least, I used to be. Thanks to the supernatural bad luck that turns everything I do against me, these days I’m more of a walking disaster. Getting rid of this curse is the only way to get my life back. Unfortunately, dragon magic is every bit as sneaky and deadly as the monsters behind it, and just as hard to beat.

But I’ve never been one to take her doom at face value. Cornered doesn’t mean defeated, and in an awakened city that rules herself, dragons are no longer the biggest powers around.

5 stars, except I hate cliffhangers

No time for a proper review, gotta go to book 3 now.

If best of the DFZ books so far, except for the cliffhanger >:(

Abrupt ending

I feel the author cheaped out with the cliffhanger ending. There are still a lot of things left unresolved, and she could have added another 5-10 pages and still had plenty of room for a sequel. Also, Opal seems closer to 16 emotionally than in her 20s, which is annoying. Too much whining! I will probably still get the next book in the series when it comes out though...

Interesting

The Shadowrun universe has always been an interesting one. While these books are a bit different, or at least leave out some aspects, they're very similar. It's almost more interesting to consider the daily lives of people living in this world than the magic and dragons.

Teenage drama was a bit much

I loved the story! However Opal is acts extremely childish. She doesn't think anything is her fault and is pushing everyone away when the speak the truth. She's supposed to be an adult but she acted more like a 16 year old girl.

So much fun

This series is so well written and read. The world construct is not complicated but original. The characters have soul and I cared about each and hoped the bad guys got their comeuppance.

Even better than the first book

Complex characters (not just an outlet for daddy issues like i was starting to worry about with the first book), finally we get some cameos, and i very much enjoed the thoughtful concepts like customization vs standardization. I'll be waiting eagerly for book 3.

Opal gets her wish

It's great finding a new author and then devoting the books as fast as you can. A really interesting world she's created with a great story with many layers. Get these books you won't regret it

Wow!

Now that was an incredible continuation to the story. Constant changes and unpredictability made for an edge-of-your-seat listen. A few mature themes, so no younger audiences unlike Minimum Wage Magic, but the scenes were justified and added to the story. Looking forward to the next one.

not a home run, but

I liked the narration of this book and the series, great job of getting the emotion and meaning behind the words out. The story in the book was alright and added to the characters and the series story line but not a home run. Opal a bit too focus on getting rid of the curse and not seeing the damage she causing in what she is doing. Learning more about the DMZ and Opal's dad good points. Treating this book as a prologue to the next book.
