This isn’t the book you would have read twenty years ago. It is a brief lecture followed by a feel good discussion with the audience.

This is both overly detailed and superficial at the same time. I am sure I will return the paperback I ordered to accompany the audio book. There is supposed to be a PDF of the moves that you have to download as you order the audio book. Saw it not. Although only a few years old, the information on theory and diet seem quite dated.

Story
Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease challenges conventional cardiology by posing a compelling, revolutionary idea—that we can, in fact, abolish the heart disease epidemic in this country by changing our diets. Drawing on the groundbreaking results of his twenty-year nutritional study, Dr. Caldwell B. Esselstyn, Jr., a former surgeon, researcher, and clinician at the Cleveland Clinic, convincingly argues that a plant-based, oil-free diet can not only prevent and stop the progression of heart disease, but also reverse its effects.

Incredibly rich compared to the film, which was already quite good. I’m happy to have found this narration by Samira Wiley. With all due respect to the author, this voice is softer and somehow seems more authentic.

Story
Largely autobiographical, La Vagabonde recalls Colette's own years as a dance hall performer in turn of the century Paris, where she takes the listener backstage and into the demimonde of Renée Néré, an aging dancer, mime, and failed writer. Successfully evoking the excitement, the sounds, smells, tastes, textures, and colors of the Parisian dance hall, Renée describes her romance with her admirer, Maxime, and the downward slide of a young Piaf type singer named Jadin.

This biographical novel of Michelangelo by Irving Stone is a great deal more than I expected. It has lead me to reassemble art history text books from my college days and to buy a book of his poetry and sketches. It has even given me a bit more pride in having studied drawing and painting in school and regret that I was such a miserable sculptor in the required course of my sophomore year. What fun! I’m so grateful to still have pencils and papers at hand.

Story
Writing with the telegraphic swiftness and microscopic sensitivity that have made her one of our most distinguished journalists, Joan Didion creates a shimmering novel of innocence and evil. A Book of Common Prayer is the story of two American women in the derelict Central American nation of Boca Grande. Grace Strasser-Mendana controls much of the country's wealth and knows virtually all of its secrets; Charlotte Douglas knows far too little.

Way over the top, but worth it.

I listened to the first two books in the Socrates Trilogy and enjoyed them very much. This on bothered me at the start. The narration seemed overly dramatic and I felt like I was being “put on.” Then I realized that I was accustomed to a neutral narrator speaking in a neutral cadence with neutral emphasis, ie: white. The written text would be read this, but the narrator as well as the characters are using the phrasing and emphasis that is authentic to the context. Whether this is an accurate observation or not, the story is richer for it. For me anyway.

This guy thinks and writes with beautiful clarity, and having had problems every time I relapsed from more than twenty years of ketogenic eating, I was ready for his message. Besides feeling so much better than I've felt in many years, I have been liberated from cupboards and refrigerator shelves full of the foods I thought were so good for health and wellness whose promises are empty. I love my minimalist kitchen!
