Not a hint of subtlety
Reviewed: 06-06-25
No escapism with this one if you wanted a horror story to distract you from the real world horrors going on around us. To each their own, I know that, but for me bringing in real world stuff (covid, Trump) dates a book. I want to escape, if i want to hear this id turn on the news or get on facebook. Writers used to have subtlety and nuance because they trusted their reader, this feels the opposite. The characters are just caricatures with no real meat on their literary bones. It's a shame cause i pre-ordered this.

Story
In June 1993, a group of young guerilla filmmakers spent four weeks making Horror Movie, a notorious, disturbing, art-house horror flick. The weird part? Only three of the film’s scenes were ever released to the public, but Horror Movie has nevertheless grown a rabid fanbase. Three decades later, Hollywood is pushing for a big budget reboot.

Pretentious with no pretense

Paul is an incredible writer and I believe he knows that. The big problem with this book is he expects a lot from the listener, to trust him that he's going somewhere with every long drawn out scene. It doesnt. This book feels like it wants to challenge you but, again, it doesn't. It just kind of meanders and over explains while under explaining at the same time and then it just....ends.

Story
Harry Potter has never even heard of Hogwarts when the letters start dropping on the doormat at number four, Privet Drive. Addressed in green ink on yellowish parchment with a purple seal, they are swiftly confiscated by his grisly aunt and uncle. Then, on Harry's eleventh birthday, a great beetle-eyed giant of a man called Rubeus Hagrid bursts in with some astonishing news: Harry Potter is a wizard, and he has a place at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. An incredible adventure is about to begin!

I have never read the books or seen the movies, but with Hogwarts Legacy coming, I decided to give them ago. Even as a 32 year old man, these books STILL are a fun read, wonderfully written. I can't wait to keep reading.

But the night before the big game, one of the players tells a ghost story about Daphne, a girl who went to their school many years ago and died under mysterious circumstances. Some say she was murdered, others that she died by her own hand. And some say that Daphne is a murderer herself.

Should have been a short story.
Reviewed: 09-23-22
Josh Malerman is a writer who i buy his books sight unseen. Knowing nothing about this book i bought it immediately. It took me three days to finish this relatively short story due to it being overly long and mostly boring. I say mostly boring because there were definitely high spots. Its not scary if you're looking for a horror book and its not even that unique. There is one movie in particular this book reminds me of but i wont say because it will be a spoiler. The killer is cool and so is the idea behind it but the reasons given and the entire ending is just....nothing. Anticlimactic. the journal entries (to me personally) are a boring and over done addition. The kills are brutal but stomachable. There are some tense parts but are few and far between. In closing give it a shot if you're a die hard Malerman fan otherwise id skip it. *spoilers*......just watch It Follows instead.

How does such a short story feel like it's never going to end? The main character is constantly mewling and insufferably dour. There is just no likable character here to anchor you to the story and the writing is verbose. Give this story a pass.

This book grabs you from the very beginning. As a 31 year old guy who absolutely loves horror i was worried that it would be too childish, but it wasn't. It actually had a spooky moment or two and was just over all very enjoyable. I cant wait to share this book with my nephew....when he's a little bit older haha. Hopefully the movie is anywhere near as good as this book.
