About this listen

A chilling twist on the “cursed film” genre from the bestselling author of The Pallbearers Club and The Cabin at the End of the World.

In June 1993, a group of young guerilla filmmakers spent four weeks making Horror Movie, a notorious, disturbing art-house horror flick.

The weird part? Only three of the film’s scenes were ever released to the public, but Horror Movie has nevertheless grown a rabid fanbase. Three decades later, Hollywood is pushing for a big budget reboot.

The man who played “The Thin Kid” is the only surviving cast member. He remembers all too well the secrets buried within the original screenplay, the bizarre events of the filming, and the dangerous crossed lines on set that resulted in tragedy. As memories flood back in, the boundaries between reality and film, past and present start to blur. But he’s going to help remake the film, even if it means navigating a world of cynical producers, egomaniacal directors, and surreal fan conventions—demons of the past be damned.

But at what cost?

Horror Movie is an obsessive, psychologically chilling, and suspenseful feat of storytelling genius that builds inexorably to an unforgettable, mind-bending conclusion.

Great!

No spoilers but the only complaint I have is the page turning sound effect was overused. The story, while I wouldn’t call this horror, was unsettling. I was constantly trying to figure out where it was going, and I was surprised where we ended up. This is a book I will have to listen to again to pick up all the clues.

A slow burn but worth it

Great suspense leading up into the ending, would highly recommend. The performance had quite a few outtakes though but still was overall very well edited and acted.

loved it

Excellent horror novel. Very eerie and the ending was great! Great setting (past and present) great characters, and I love the use of mixed media with the script portions. It adds to the story well. The narration was spot on, and the use of multiple narrators was needed in my opinion for an audio book like this so great call on that! The timing was meticulous and well crafted. Overall I would definitely recommend to horror book AND movie fans!

Creates a spooky mood

Professional production. Great gripping story. the producing really played into the story, maybe a better listen than read.

Great Performance, Middle of the Road Execution.

As usual, Paul Tremblay favors vague horror elements. it's good, and the crew reading the screenplay like a table read was fun, but overall the premise sold is way more enthralling than what occurs.

Great voice acting

Really great performances, story lags a little in the middle to end but strong finish. A refreshingly new take on horror!

Slasher Horror

When the movie consumes you mishaps happen. What would it be like to be a part of a slasher that goes terribly wrong? Beautifully written.

Highly engaging performance, lackluster story

The actual reading of this story was well-directed and kept me listening. I was particularly captivated by the table read sections, which felt organic and immersive. However, the story itself did not live up to the expectations set by the performance. It seems like the author didn’t really know how to tie everything up at the end. A lot of build-up for a disappointing payoff.
