About this listen

Instant New York Times bestseller!

A chilling twist on the “cursed film” genre from the bestselling author of The Pallbearers Club and The Cabin at the End of the World.

In June 1993, a group of young guerilla filmmakers spent four weeks making Horror Movie, a notorious, disturbing, art-house horror flick.

The weird part? Only three of the film’s scenes were ever released to the public, but Horror Movie has nevertheless grown a rabid fanbase. Three decades later, Hollywood is pushing for a big budget reboot.

The man who played “The Thin Kid” is the only surviving cast member. He remembers all too well the secrets buried within the original screenplay, the bizarre events of the filming, and the dangerous crossed lines on set that resulted in tragedy. As memories flood back in, the boundaries between reality and film, past and present start to blur. But he’s going to help remake the film, even if it means navigating a world of cynical producers, egomaniacal directors, and surreal fan conventions—demons of the past be damned.

But at what cost?

Horror Movie is an obsessive, psychologically chilling, and suspenseful feat of storytelling genius that builds inexorably to an unforgettable, mind-bending conclusion

Much better than I expected!

I was a bit hesitant reading some reviews but I wholeheartedly disagree with those who disliked the VO direction. Staging the script segments like a true tableread was clever, in my mind, and adds clever juxtaposition to the “autobiography” of the book’s other half. One side is the story, the fake, the fiction that is Horror Movie while the other is the real, the experience of someone living too close to darkness.
The VO was well done, only slightly modified/overlayed but not over the top in production. The book is very well written and the author’s voice is strong throughout. The story is engaging and leaves you wanting to read more, to hear more, after every chapter.
Well worth your time!

Electric and Earnest

Genuinely, I think this one of the best books I’ve read in years, maybe ever read. The specific way that it bounces back and forth, the specific parts of the movie we get, and the Thin Kid’s overall journey. I found this story unbelievably thrilling and, ultimately, heartbreaking and horrifying. Major kudos to the audiobook performers and engineers. I am going to tell everyone I know about this, and I can’t wait to read this again.

Fun, twisty

I enjoyed this quite a bit. The narration was excellent and I enjoyed the pauses and repeats that lent a certain depth to the overall performance. The story was enjoyable and easy to get into. I didn't have trouble following it, even with the jumps between past/present and then between events in the past/present.

Fantastic and original

Don’t let anyone describe this one to you. Don’t read any reviews that give it away. Experience it for yourself.

So much tension!

Excellent. The tension was really ramped up, so Much so that I had to listen on 2x to get through at some points. The sounds of someone reading the script, as some reviews mention, is irritating— but it is meant to be so, I think. Really added to my sense of unease.

Outstanding story and performance

I always enjoy Paul Tremblay’s books, but I have to say, this one is my new favorite. It’s better going into this one blind if you can. It’s a wild ride.

Not what I thought.

I like the premise. I would’ve like more scary bits in there. Lots and lots of build up to a pretty predictable end. It was entertaining and a fun listen. The voice actors were great.

like a monster

this story will shake your hand at first with a weak grasp which will gradually build into a grip that crushes your hand into powder and rip the pulped meat off your wrist. I haven't gotten this sucked into a story in I don't know how long

It took me a minute to figure out what was happening, but once I knew, it was smooth sailing.
