About this listen

Instant New York Times bestseller!

A chilling twist on the “cursed film” genre from the bestselling author of The Pallbearers Club and The Cabin at the End of the World.

In June 1993, a group of young guerilla filmmakers spent four weeks making Horror Movie, a notorious, disturbing, art-house horror flick.

The weird part? Only three of the film’s scenes were ever released to the public, but Horror Movie has nevertheless grown a rabid fanbase. Three decades later, Hollywood is pushing for a big budget reboot.

The man who played “The Thin Kid” is the only surviving cast member. He remembers all too well the secrets buried within the original screenplay, the bizarre events of the filming, and the dangerous crossed lines on set that resulted in tragedy. As memories flood back in, the boundaries between reality and film, past and present start to blur. But he’s going to help remake the film, even if it means navigating a world of cynical producers, egomaniacal directors, and surreal fan conventions—demons of the past be damned.

But at what cost?

Horror Movie is an obsessive, psychologically chilling, and suspenseful feat of storytelling genius that builds inexorably to an unforgettable, mind-bending conclusion

This book is told as if it were a documentary. We cut between the original filming of Horror Movie, the script reading, and the remake. The script reading parts are great. We hear them stumble on their words, stop and start when they feel it wasn't good enough, the pages turn as they read the scenes. It was very immersive.

The story focuses on the thin kid. He's the sole surviving member of the original cast and crew of Horror Movie, a film from the 90s that was never released in full, but scenes were posted on YouTube.

Horror Movie the film explores what teenagers might do to another kid that they, for some reason, detest. It then shifts to the thin kid, the kid they hate, and his experiences as their captive. Their pet. Their thing.

The book explores what this acting may turn someone into while also heavily relying on the retelling of the entire story from the perspective of the thin kid. He's an adult now but we know very little about him. It's not a scary book, but it is rather unsettling to hear about how he gets into character, and how everything plays out.

It's a great read

Very interesting take

There is plenty of torture to go around...physical and mental. These teens are playing out the depths of their inner lives by using a horror movie script. What is wrong with these people??! And where are their parents??!

The reality of a group of teens spending days and nights and overnights without end in an abandoned school without detection is nill...never happened anywhere! And...for the purpose of torturing a supposed friend...a thin kid...and calling it an arty horror movie...is awful and laughable.

I am a Paul Tremblay fan and this novel will be made into a movie...a horror movie! To make it believable, please correct this glaring gaps.

Torture Aplenty with Excellent Narration

Loved the entire book and the way it was set up. The characters were predictable - or so I THOUGHT. Ha! Loved it. I admit I binged it. I woke up one night at 3 am and immediately plugged in because I couldn’t stop thinking about what could be next. Great read!

definitely did not expect the plot twist that the. rippled into the other play twist.

odd twist

while the story and acting are good, there is a LOT of this story using the meta narrative to pat itself on the back and say "I don't wanna sound pretentious, but..." and will then proceed to narrate a long winded aside that is just that

pretention movie

This book is very similar to the book fantastic land (one of my favorites) in that it is a retelling of a disaster situation where the audience is expected to go into it knowing what the disaster is. I love this approach to story telling. The problem with this story is it feels like it skipped over certain key aspects both in the fictional film and the retelling. By far the biggest issue is the audio. It's like the production company uploaded a rough draft, there are multiple times where the narrator will read a line wrong and then go back and read it again. One time where they are being instructed on how to read a line. Spots where they are fading from script reading to performance are layered over one another making the audio hard to hear and messy. The only saving grace for the audio is the main characters audio is well acted.

Fictional Documentary

Tremblay continues his streak of great fiction. Definitely pick this one up, especially if you dug HFoG.
