About this listen

Cassandra Khaw's Nothing but Blackened Teeth is a gorgeously creepy haunted house tale, steeped in Japanese folklore and full of devastating twists.

A Heian-era mansion stands abandoned, its foundations resting on the bones of a bride and its walls packed with the remains of the girls sacrificed to keep her company.

It’s the perfect venue for a group of thrill-seeking friends, brought back together to celebrate a wedding.

A night of food, drinks, and games quickly spirals into a nightmare as secrets get dragged out and relationships are tested.

But the house has secrets too. Lurking in the shadows is the ghost bride with a black smile and a hungry heart.

And she gets lonely down there in the dirt.

Effortlessly taking the classic haunted house story and turning it on its head, Nothing but Blackened Teeth is a sharp and devastating exploration of grief, the parasitic nature of relationships, and the consequences of our actions.

It had a ton of hearty words but the plot lacked substance and detail. It was quick and lacked emotion. The story itself was terrible. It had a possibility of having a good story but was rushed. There was no back story and the “haunting” itself disjointed

Random and wordy

I wasn't sure what to expect from this novella, but I was pleasantly delighted by the story. The overall theme of being haunted is very well done.

Easily finished within an afternoon of housekeeping.

Short but Interesting

Self-aware/meta. More sad than frightening (this is not a critique, just a statement). Introspective. I hope that you like similes and metaphors; I found some truly wonderful ones in here; every sentence seems to contain at least one (I liked them, but others may not). I learned a fair but about Japanese culture. Diversity in the cast. There were some genuinely funny moments as well.

Probably not worth a full Audible credit though.

An artistic, introspective tragedy in horror dress

Pronunciation was off, and the voice made it hard to listen to. The storyline had good potential but was rushed and the ending didn't give satisfaction.

Not worth the time

Ok. A bit too descriptive. Adjectives for days. Not my favorite. The narration was ok, but the attempt at deeper voices for the men was cringe.

Would have made a great novel! There was a lot to build on. I wanted more!

Too short!

I wanted this to be good so badly, but it feels like the author was just trying to fill an essay word count. By the time you reach the climax of the story, you don’t even understand the scene anymore.

Holy purple prose

I was expecting more. more scary. more substance. this was an okay story, but I was expecting it to be scary.

overhyped

The performance was fine. The story was fine. It was fast and had a creepy feel to it. Unfortunately Overall Not worth the credit I used to buy it. I feel very ripped off after buying this.

The story is super short

The narrator was great and the story idea was pretty cool. The execution of that idea less so. Characters and their histories with each other weren't fleshed out well enough and nothing really seemed to resolve. Only one death, but nothing really horrifying happening otherwise so pretty tame for a horror book. If you don't like poetic and flowery language, you won't like this book since sometimes it is a bit much and if your mind wanders for even a second you'll get lost in the prose and miss important plot details or points.

Was hoping for more
