Old Favorite wonderful narrator

I reread favorite books and this is on the list. I love when the audio books narration doesn't change my minds eye and ear imagining of a book. The accents could have been better. My husband's family is from the Alexandria area so I am a little picky. The "voice" my reading gave Goblin was different but otherwise the audio book is a wonderful way to revisit a favorite.

Story
Environmental devastation and economic chaos have turned America into a land of horrifying depravity. Assault, theft, sexual abuse, slavery, and murder are commonplace. And a zealous, bigoted tyrant has won his way into the White House. Directly opposed is Lauren Olamina, founder of Earthseed - a new faith that teaches "God Is Change". Persecuted for "heathen" beliefs as much as for having a Black female leader, Earthseed's followers face a life-and-death struggle to preserve their vision.

Story
God is change. That is the central truth of the Earthseed movement, whose unlikely prophet is 18-year-old Lauren Olamina. The young woman's diary entries tell the story of her life amid a violent 21st-century hell of walled neighborhoods and drug-crazed pyromaniacs - and reveal her evolving Earthseed philosophy. Against a backdrop of horror emerges a message of hope: if we are willing to embrace divine change, we will survive to fulfill our destiny among the stars.

I'm so excited about the next book. This was a great read although the dark mirror reflects the depravity humans are capable of. It is hard to believe this was written in the 90s.

I am a picky reader, probably to my detriment. I read for escape and had always preferred reading versus listening for escape. I reread my favorite books at least once a year. I am a Covid-19 widow and now full-time caregiver to my parents who both have dementia. I don't get much opportunity to sit and read so audiobooks have become my escape. As I get through my day I listen to books. I discovered Pierce Brown a few weeks ago and have been a glutton. As I have gotten through this series I have loved every moment of it and dreaded the end. I have laughed out loud, exclaimed in shock, gasped at the deaths of characters. Every moment has been a pleasure. Thank you Pierce Brown for creating such a fantastic world and sharing it. Thank you for giving every book the same depth. Thank you for choosing excellent narrators. Thank you for the moments of escape. I am burned out by the grief of losing my husband so suddenly and slowly losing my parents to an insidious disease. I am grateful for these books and will listen again and again.

Darrow would have lived in peace, but his enemies brought him war. The Gold overlords demanded his obedience, hanged his wife, and enslaved his people. But Darrow is determined to fight back. Risking everything to transform himself and breach Gold society, Darrow has battled to survive the cutthroat rivalries that breed Society's mightiest warriors, climbed the ranks, and waited patiently to unleash the revolution that will tear the hierarchy apart from within.

I love the pace of this story. The narrator is excellent. The character depth surprises often. I was listening in my car as I pulled in to Costco and a "Oh no not him!" moment happened. I debated listening in the car for 5-10 more minutes before going in to Costco, listening on speaker damn everyone else or quickly running the Costco gauntlet to get back to it sooner. I opted for the latter.
I am moving on to the next book and I'm going to buy the hardcopy books for my dad. He is a devout Sci-fi reader and even at 79 he reads a book a day. He lost most of his hearing working on jet engine's and flying C-5s in the Air Force. He will love this series as I do.

With its volatile mix of the fantastical and the contemporary, the everyday and the otherworldly, Weaveworld is an epic work of dark fantasy and horror - a tour de force from one of today's most forceful and imaginative artists.

I was so in love with this book as a young woman that I bought a paperback to share with friends. I have loved Barker's worlds, characters and magics since I was gifted the Damnation Game at 14.
Listening to this narrator is always a pleasure.
Love, hate, a magic carpet, hags, talking monkeys, monsters, shady salesmen, monster angels, and unlikely heroes. Beautiful.
