About this listen

A former slave fighting for justice. A reclusive warrior who no longer believes it exists. And a dark magic that will entangle their fates.

Ripped from a forgotten homeland as a child, Tisaanah learned how to survive with nothing but a sharp wit and a touch of magic. But the night she tries to buy her freedom, she barely escapes with her life.

Desperate to save the best friend she left behind, Tisaanah journeys to the Orders, the most powerful organizations of magic Wielders in the world. But to join their ranks, she must complete an apprenticeship with Maxantarius Farlione, a handsome and reclusive fire wielder who despises the Orders.

The Orders's intentions are cryptic, and Tisaanah must prove herself under the threat of looming war. But even more dangerous are her growing feelings for Maxantarius. The bloody past he wants to forget may be the key to her future...or the downfall of them both.

But Tisaanah will stop at nothing to save those she abandoned. Even if it means gambling in the Orders's deadly games. Even if it means sacrificing her heart.

Even if it means wielding death itself.

Contains mature themes.

Great story - breathy narrator

This is a great story if you can get through the chapters where the guy narrates. He has a good voice but you can hear him sharply inhale so often that it’s distracting. I’m wondering if there is a way to edit it out bc it’s seriously hard to listen to and takes away from the story.

Overall, really enjoyed this listen!

I really enjoyed this listen! Loved all the characters and the story. The narrater for the female mc was fantastic but I was not a fan of the narrator for the male mc. It sounded like he was always rushing his lines and became out of breath. His voices all sounded the same as well. I found myself feeling relieved when the next chapter was the female narrator. Overall, really good! Excited to start the next one in the series!

Wow

Why isn’t this book more popular?! It’s amazing! I loved both the MC and the plot. It was giving Throne of Glass vibes but better! The FMC was great. Sometimes the main characters can get annoying but she was perfect the whole book. And I am in love with the MMC. I adore the fact that they were enemies turned FRIENDS and then lovers. It makes it all the sweeter when they finally get together.

Best fantasy read so far in 2023

Carissa has such a powerful “show don’t tell” way of writing! Descriptive and easy to digest. Some high fantasy reads can be such an info dump that you just can’t understand what’s happening. This is not the case for this book. Can’t wait to pick up book two.

Simply amazing

I thought I wasn’t going to enjoy This book. There’s a lot of world building. But half way though it completely turns. It’s so action pact and crazy and amazing! There’s so much happening!! Good lord this was a great story! I can’t wait to continue on to book two.

Male narrator inhales every comma..

The story is original and captivating, I really had no clue where it would go. I enjoy the female narrator but honestly she did the male voice better than the male narrator. I swear he took a sharp inhale every other word

Great story!

A great build up to what I’m sure is going to be an epic saga. Great narration. Kept me coming back. Can’t wait to see what book 2 has to offer!

Beautiful Book

I absolutely loved this book. Best fantasy book I have read in a while. The narration was terrible, especially the male narrator.

Enjoyed it thoroughly!

A great story, but if you are particular about your narrators this one might be better read on paper.

Male narrator almost ruined this book for me

I loved the story, and the female narrator, but my god, the male narrator almost made me stop listening. He was constantly sucking in air, sharp inhales every few words. It was incredibly distracting. And he was so monotone. I don’t understand how anyone would have listened to his performance and decided to publish it as is.
