Story
Washington, DC, 1950. Everyone keeps to themselves at Briarwood House, a down-at-the-heels all-female boardinghouse in the heart of the nation’s capital where secrets hide behind white picket fences. But when the lovely, mysterious widow Grace March moves into the attic room, she draws her oddball collection of neighbors into unlikely friendship. Grace’s weekly attic-room dinner parties and window-brewed sun tea become a healing balm on all their lives, but she hides a terrible secret of her own.

Slow start - I wanted to love this book
Reviewed: 07-19-24
We listened to this book for our small book club. We had recently read the Rose Code, so we were excited when this book was announced.
The book had a very slow start and stayed that way for quite some time. Just as things would get interesting it would become stagnant again. The recipes in each chapter was odd and I would lose my attention as they were being read and then it would take me a little time to get back into it.
Now for the good, the narrator did a good job with all the different characters, she helped keep my interest. The story had a decent ending that did finally bring it all together. I enjoyed the authors notes and interview at the end. It is well worth listening through. Overall I give it a 3.5 star rating amongst the recent books I’ve listened too and read. The author is a good writer, but she definitely had a “miss” with this book. It won’t stop me from buying her books in the future as it kept me moving forward throughout the storyline, but I can’t say I loved this book.

Story
Emma London never thought she had anything in common with her grandmother Genevieve London. The regal old woman came from wealthy and bluest-blood New England stock, but that didn't protect her from life's cruelest blows. Genevieve rose from the ashes of grief and built a fashion empire that was respected the world over, even when it meant neglecting her other son. When Emma's own mother died, her father abandoned her on his mother's doorstep. Genevieve took Emma in and reluctantly raised her - until Emma got pregnant her senior year of high school.

End leaves you hanging
Reviewed: 06-26-23
I ultimately only gave this book 4 stars because, while I enjoyed the story, the end just leaves you hanging.
The main character Nori lives an awful life of pain and solitude. The writer does a good job of helping the lead come alive. The narrators were great except for the main narrator that had a bit of an annoying lisp that was hard to ignore. I think she was trying to sound Japanese. I did love that they used multiple narrators so one could decipher who was talking. I definitely enjoyed the book as a whole and wouldn't hesitate to recommend to others, with the premise that the author could have given the story a better ending tieing it all together.

I seriously, absolutely, LOVED this book! It had so many different plot twists I was not expecting (and I usually can predict what will happen). This has to be in my top 10 of favorite books of all time! The narrators made you believe you were in the story watching it unfold. The author perfectly told the story so you weren't lost. I did not want this story to end, it was that good!

First, huge props to Jodi Picoult for hitting the mark with this book and covid! I have to admit that I haven't been a huge fan of some of her books in the past, so when this one was chosen for our book club I groaned a little. But once I started I couldn't stop listening! There are some very unexpected twists in this book that totally took me by surprise! I don't want to say too much, as it will spoil the story. But don't hesitate buying this book!
The narrator hit it on the head with her reading of this book! I'm looking forward to seeing the movie, I just hope I'm not disappointed in the end, because the book was so amazing!

Possible Spoiler in my revirw-
If the ending had been a bit better, I'd have given this story 5 stars.
As a whole I really enjoyed the book and the storyline. I learned a piece of history I hadn't known before about arsenic being in certain dyes. I wonder how many innocent people had been sentenced to death over arsenic being in clothing in history that were innocent?
There is a lot of back and forth between Dorothea and Ruth and did get confused from time to time, but I love how the author had Dorothea feel an apathy towards Ruth. How she was able to put herself in Ruth's shies to develop an understanding for her life and just how hard it was. The natrators did a great job of making you believe they were the characters they were protraying.
Thus book was described as a "chilling mystery" but it wasn't very chilling to me. It was definitely on the lighter side.
As a whole I'd not hesitate to recommend this book to others.

I honestly wasn't sure what I was getting into when I started this book. I enjoyed the storyline and the narrator was good, except sometimes she'd get breathy and be almost whispering.
I only gave the book four stars because I'd have like to have seen the author elaborate a bit more on some of the storyline. I felt it fast forwarded to future days and you'd all of a sudden be three years later with major life differences and confused. Otherwise I was happy with in choosing this book to listen too. It was nice to listen to a story without vulgar language and sex scenes.

Interesting perspective on life...
Reviewed: 07-11-22
I listened to this book as part of a book club I'm in. In all fairness to the author, I didn't really know what I was going to be reading. I just purchased the book as soon as it was chosen. It had a bit of a long, slow start. I honestly was becoming bored and feeling like I was listening to a teen novel with a lot of swear words until it got to part 3.
Once part 3 hit I felt like the story really started to come to life.
The author gives a thought provoking view on life and "The what if's of life, if you could go back to a certain poignant day of your life and do it all over until you get it right." Or do you end up changing so much it's hard to go back to where you started. I love that the author spent time on the part of the storyline where the daughter realizes she wants more meaningful time with her father who raised her. Since I lost my father 10 years ago, I too sit and wonder the what if's?
The Book is a light read and the narration is great. Would I read or listen again? Probably not, but I certainly don't feel like I lost out on listening. The Book definitely put thought provoking ideas 💡 in my mind by the end.

I love a book that has amazing historical references that we rarely hear about and is also an enjoyable listen/read!
This book references a part of American history rarely talked about. I learned so much and had a hard time putting this book up at the end of the day. I found myself listening every chance I got.
The only disappointment I found was the end. I feel for as wonderful as the storyline was the end fell a little flat, I still gave this five stars 🌟 since I learned so much!
