Story
The lives of Leonardo da Vinci, Henry VIII, and Queen Victoria fill bookshelves and fascinate scholars all over the world. But little attention is given to the ferret who posed for the Renaissance master, the servant who oversaw the Tudor’s toilet time, or the famous horse who thrilled the miserable old monarch. These supporting cast members have been waiting in the wings for too long, and Adrian Bliss thinks it’s high time they join their glory-hogging contemporaries in the spotlight. Fortunately, now they can.

Unique, humorous, and touching
Reviewed: 12-31-24
As a fan of Adrian Bliss's YouTube shorts, I was delighted to hear he had written a book. The stories are entertaining and informative; amidst the often irreverent and satirical tone, the listener gains fascinating insights into the realities of various historical time periods, events, and people. It's clear that a lot of research and a lot of heart went into this project.
Most of the stories are humorous, and a few are more serious. Several of the narrators are animals, and in one story a deadly microbe is interviewed. The author is occasionally a bit heavy handed in his sarcasm towards Christianity, but for the most part the foibles he brings to the forefront are indeed worthy of criticism or at least light-hearted jabs.
Overall, the book is enjoyable, and I would love to listen to another such collection of stories if Bliss ever gets around to writing one. If you love Adrian Bliss, history, or both, give this book a listen.

Eclectic, engaging fun with Heaton
Reviewed: 10-20-23
I found out about Inappropriately Human through the author's podcast The Political Orphanage, which aired a sample story (Re: Your Timeline Infractions). After listening to that and the sample provided on Audible (from The Man Behind the Curtain), I knew I had to have this book. Many of these stories are sci-fi or apocalyptic, but not all. The Man Behind the Curtain (a slice-of-life adventure) and The Whistler (a spooky supernatural thriller) stood out as favorites. Most of the stories are humorous or at least contain humor. Some are heartwarming, and some are dark. I enjoyed the variety.
Two critiques: The book is a bit heavy on the cussing/vulgarity for my taste, although this didn't come as a shock considering Heaton's comedy writing style. The stories vary in length, from vignettes or comedy monologue-style pieces to the written equivalent of a TV show. This is fine except that in the case of about three or four stories the narrative suddenly cuts off without any resolution, just as the story was starting to gain traction. I don't like being left hanging, and I'd like to see Heaton develop some of these stories further. The concepts are interesting enough for a fuller treatment.
Heaton's narration is great. I love it when authors record their own audiobooks, and I find Heaton's voice pleasant to listen to.
This collection is loads of fun, and I would recommend it to anyone who likes Andrew Heaton, irreverent sci-fi, humor, or is just in the mood for something eclectic and different.

Story
It’s rumoured that Dickens wanted to return to his classic novel Oliver Twist, to bring him back into a later book as an older character, but he never managed this before he died. However, if Oliver had returned, what would he have been like? Would the scars of his childhood affect the man he would become? And what of ‘Dodger’, sent to a land halfway around the world, his friend, mentor and master dead because of Oliver? Dodge & Twist is that story. The tale of two boys, 12 years later, returning into each other’s lives - for both good and bad.

Fun and suspenseful, yet problematic
Reviewed: 04-11-22
Having recently finished listening to Jonathan Pryce's narration of Oliver Twist, I was excited to get into this "what if?" sequel. The production value is great, and the story keeps you engaged with plenty of intrigue. Just when you think you know where the story's headed, it throws you another Twist, shall we say. Having read a few of Dickens's works besides Oliver Twist, I appreciated the Easter eggs Tony Lee threw in towards the climax and ending. (If you've read Great Expectations and/or A Christmas Carol, you'll see what I mean.)
Overall, the program is satisfyingly immersive, with authentic sounding accents and street slang. But I found that as the program progresses, characters swear more (totally fitting for criminals, but not so much the Oliver we know and love), and they also start using expressions that I suspected are anachronistic ("ballsy," "screws you over," etc.). That just seemed like lazy writing to me, unless those expressions really have been around that long.
The other major issue for me was how quickly Oliver turns from being a devout straight arrow with a strong moral compass to a disillusioned pragmatist willing to team up with criminals. He's in a bind when the story begins, and no one can blame him for feeling disillusioned. But he goes from telling off a potentially corrupt financial manager in one scene (he piously tells the guy God is going to judge him for his misdeeds), to finding Dodger and accepting his offer of a part in a criminal plot. It's as if, as soon as the condemning words are out of his mouth, Oliver goes, "Welp, so much for that. Now to go live a life of crime, since that's my only option!" (Nevermind that he still has at least one decent friend in London. We'll get to that.) Throughout the story he repeatedly complains, "We've already established that God hates me," which *could* fit his character if he'd started off the story talking like that, but instead it's a dramatic shift from one scene to the next. He waits until he's already in over his head to do the most obvious next option, which is go find Mr. Grimwig in person since the letters he'd sent before the story begins never received replies. Of course Mr. Grimwig is willing to help, as anyone familiar with the character knows he would be, but by this time Oliver "has" to complete the heist. Oliver does all kinds of questionable things throughout the story and repeatedly complains and acts as if Dodger is making him do it all, when he really isn't -- Oliver is a willing participant and can't even admit it to himself. By the end, he still blames Dodger for "corrupting" him. Mischief and crime are ultimately rewarded, and we're supposed to be okay with that.
So, while Dodge & Twist makes for a fun listen, you may find yourself frustrated if you're expecting Oliver to be consistent.

Story
When young orphan, Oliver Twist, is sold into an apprenticeship with an undertaker, he leaves behind years of miserable servitude and mistreatment at an English workhouse. Hoping to move on to better things, he decides to escape his new, equally dreary surroundings and head to London. It is there that the novel unravels as Oliver meets a host of larger-than-life characters, including The Artful Dodger, a high-ranking member of a juvenile pickpocketing gang, and their elderly leader, Fagin.

Great voices and memorable characters
Reviewed: 03-27-22
Loved Dickens's savage wit and social commentary. I found myself guffawing often, sometimes just moments before the story delivered a gut punch with its descriptions of how the poor were treated in Dickens's day. Jonathan Pryce's narration is excellent, complete with a variety of voices and regional accents.
The story itself, while occasionally melodramatic and a teensy bit slow in the middle, is engaging overall. There were characters I loved (Oliver, Mr. Grimwig, Mr. Losberne) and characters I loved to hate (Mr. Bumble, Mrs. Mann, Noah Claypole). Whether or not you're familiar with the story, I encourage you to give this one a listen.
Don't miss out on this classic!

Story
The world will end on Saturday. Next Saturday. Just before dinner, according to The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch, the world's only completely accurate book of prophecies, written in 1655. The armies of Good and Evil are amassing and everything appears to be going according to Divine Plan. Except that a somewhat fussy angel and a fast-living demon are not actually looking forward to the coming Rapture. And someone seems to have misplaced the Antichrist.
