such a great story!

absolutely loved it. this book had beautiful character development with a more fast pace set to it. not what I'd consider slow burn by any means. some very interesting twists to it. I can't wait for book 2 and more explanations and reveals to see if my theories are correct

Just hours after humans are born, the gods take what little power we have. In return, they protect our borders from the vicious, merciless fae. The humans who manage to keep their power are known as the corrupt. And they are burned. When my forbidden power is discovered, I’m forced to flee my tiny village and the life I adore. To survive, I make a desperate bargain with the mercenary who abandoned me at my weakest moment. Our deal is simple: I’ll help him and his mysterious friends sneak into the city, and he’ll help me learn to wield the strange, dark power I’ve always kept hidden.

the narrator killed it for me
Reviewed: 09-02-24
the book has a great concept, but I did feel it was too slow for the majority of the story, which normally I wouldn't mind. a slow burn can sometimes lead to the absolute best stories. but the narrator's terrible attempts at male voices was just too much of a distraction. and she lacked all emotional inflection other than moments of anger. she was very one note reading this. maybe I'll give it another try with a paperback copy so I can let the story lend its own voices to my mind

the story is incredibly well constructed, and having Rosamund Pike as the narrator brings this so beautifully to life. she creates a voice for every character. she's absolutely wonderful and I hope she narrates the others as well

Story
Deep below the University, there is a dark place. Few people know of it: a broken web of ancient passageways and abandoned rooms. A young woman lives there, tucked among the sprawling tunnels of the Underthing, snug in the heart of this forgotten place. Her name is Auri, and she is full of mysteries. The Slow Regard of Silent Things is a brief, bittersweet glimpse of Auri’s life, a small adventure all her own. At once joyous and haunting, this story offers a chance to see the world through Auri’s eyes.

this is not an average style story

the author makes it very clear that this story is one that he felt his audience would hate. he even says at the prologue going over his author's notes that he didn't want to publish it, but everyone kept pushing for it. I think probably the most beautiful notation he gives is that he understands. this character is a beautiful, broken soul and he can relate. I think a lot of people can probably relate to that. I know I definitely can, which is why hearing the story solely from the point of view. from Ari made it so truly beautiful. it's a very strong glimpse inside the mind of someone and how they process things and see the world. it's like spending a day in someone else's head where all your doing is supervising and watching and listening to their thoughts and their actions and I found it to be truly beautiful.

Story
The corrupt and powerful PsiCorps is determined to usurp the Hunters as chief defenders of Apex City, and Joy is now squarely in their crosshairs. Unused to playing political games, she has very few people she can truly trust - not even Josh, her first friend in Apex City, who broke up with her when it became too dangerous for a Psimon to be dating a Hunter. Then Josh comes to Joy for help. He fears that Abigail Drift, the head of PsiCorps, will soon use him in her twisted experiments designed to empower PsiCorps and render Hunters superfluous.

disappointed there is no actual ending
Reviewed: 08-10-23
this is the last book Mercedes lackey wrote for this story line and she has said in interviews that she feels happy with where she left it, but there are no actual resolutions to this story. absolutely nothing is resolved or concluded in this final book. the overall premise of this story has been intriguing, but the delivery was truly weak. and I don't mean the delivery given by the narrator as she did the best she could with what she had to work with. I mean that the choices made for where to take the characters was an immense waste of time. I cannot say enough how disappointed I am with this, because I truly wanted to love the series for originality, but this final book in the series makes me wish I'd never stumbled on them.

Story
In the final book of the Wizard for Hire trilogy, Ozzy and his friend (and Rin’s daughter), Sigi, are in danger. They are still being hunted by Ray, the power-mad villain who will stop at nothing to find the formula to the mind-controlling discipline serum - one that Ozzy’s parents created and injected into him. Knowing the dangers that lie ahead, Rin introduces Ozzy to four more friends who also claim magical, wizard-like abilities. Again, Ozzy has no reason to believe that magic exists or that Rin’s eccentric friends can help.

I will re-listen for sure. it was sweet, charming, and it actually kept you guessing which was a great surprise.

the first half of this story was very gripping and I could not put the book down but the second half dragged and dwindled and seemed to race new characters onto the screen that beforehand had just been mentioned only to have them swept away just as quickly. plotline was wonderful but I have to say the last half of the story really dragged

Ex-military policeman Jack Reacher is a drifter. He’s just passing through Margrave, Georgia, and in less than an hour, he’s arrested for murder. Not much of a welcome. All Reacher knows is that he didn’t kill anybody. At least not here. Not lately. But he doesn’t stand a chance of convincing anyone. Not in Margrave, Georgia. Not a chance in hell.

Amazon original series was actually better
Reviewed: 12-02-22
So I will probably never be able to say this again. but I have to say that the changes that were made in the Amazon original series made the store more in depth and gave it much more character. the story overall is not a bad story, but some of the characters came across very weak and flimsy and I really liked how the original series accented it. overall, it's a great listen. not my favorite but still probably going to stay in the library

I normally don't do reviews, but I feel that this book needs one because in all honesty the story was very interesting. it brought about a lot of fantastic mythical creatures from all different genres and walks of this world. nothing was off limits to this story and I really loved this, but the narrator absolutely did not have any business narrating the story words were mispronounced tone and indication was brutal. The whining complacency he gave to the primary female character of Fiona was absolutely annoying. I completely understand that when a book has this many characters in it, it's impossible to give every single one of them their own voice, but the voices he chose were pretty weird. All that being said, definitely give it a good listen to. it was a great way to spend about a month listening to audiobooks and I enjoyed them thoroughly
