Story
We live in a world that’s obsessed with talent. We celebrate gifted students in school, natural athletes in sports, and child prodigies in music. But admiring people who start out with innate advantages leads us to overlook the distance we ourselves can travel. We underestimate the range of skills that we can learn and how good we can become. We can all improve at improving. And when opportunity doesn’t knock, there are ways to build a door.

Fantastic book about how to find hidden gems in people (including yourself!)
Reviewed: 02-06-24
Loved this book. Grant mixes compelling stories and his own narrative to discuss the importance of trend over data point, and the path one takes to success is at least as important as the success itself. If you leverage the knowledge in here properly, it will give you a competitive advantage. It would make a great companion book with Angela Duckworth’s Grit.

I love the practical nature of the book. Rather than citing the odd academic study, the book is basically, “Here is what worked for me.” I’m a new Hormozi fan!

What is the difference between a startup that makes it, and one that crashes and burns? Behind every story of success is an unfair advantage. But an Unfair Advantage is not just about your parents' wealth or who you know: Anyone can have one. An Unfair Advantage is the element that gives you an edge over your competition.

A good framework for figuring out what makes you different.

I recently finished this book as I’m taking a fresh look at my strengths, weaknesses and resources. I found the MILES framework strikes the right balance between simplicity and utility. I skipped the last two parts on entrepreneurship and fundraising as they didn’t apply to me and I’m not sure they belong in this book at all. But that’s far from a fatal flaw.

Story
When Browder’s young Russian lawyer, Sergei Magnitsky, was beaten to death in a Moscow jail in 2009, Browder cast aside his business career and made it his life’s mission to pursue justice for Sergei. One of the first steps of that mission was to uncover who had killed Sergei and profited from the $230 million corruption scheme that he had exposed. As Browder and his team tracked the money that flowed out of Russia—through the Baltics and Cyprus and on to Western Europe and the Americas—they discovered that Vladimir Putin himself was one of the beneficiaries of the crime.

This was a fascinating story about governments manipulating interpol, some horrific judge decisions and a startlingly ability is the Russians to influence US policy. If you like current svents along with. Cloak and dagger stuff (and the occasional brazen KGB thuggery). You might enjoy this book.

A good read with some useful ideas but has its limitations
Reviewed: 04-03-23
I like this book but don’t love it. The plus - it has some really good ideas and the arguments are laid out well. The minuses - there was some stumbling in the reading that should have been edited. Also I just don’t buy that every consultant can value price their services. The book could have used space to talk about how you get to the point where value pricing is realistic. The book wandered off topic for a large part, talking about collecting on late payments . It’s good content but didn’t belong in this book.

How does a suburban pizza joint end up profiled on national magazine covers and network TV news? (Hint: The secret is not in the sauce.) When Nick Sarillo decided to open a family-friendly pizza restaurant in the suburbs of Chicago, people thought he was nuts. Having worked as a carpenter for much of his adult life, he lacked any formal experience in restaurants or in managing a small business. Everyone told him no one else would ever care about his place the way he did.
