Too bad about the Narrator
Reviewed: 12-22-22
Story was good, but the narrator’s constant, undulating lilt ruined the experience for me and gave every character a trait that I’m sure the author never intended.

Story
Few residents in the small, secluded mountain town of Winston, Colorado, have kind words to say about Sean Coleman. He's a bully, a drunk, and a crime show-addicted armchair detective with an overactive imagination. After a night of poor judgment, Sean finds himself the sole witness to the unusual suicide of a mysterious stranger. With the body whisked away in the chilling rapids of a raging river, no one believes Sean's account.

Odd Choice of Narrator
Reviewed: 11-07-21
Great story, odd choice of narrator. Why choose a narrator for whom American English (the language/dialect of the book’s characters) is not their first language? It was distracting. Also, the production value was poor. Many excerpts throughout the book sounded louder or quieter than others, and some excerpts seemed to be “spliced in.”

I have listened to multiple Lawson novels over the past month. Here’s my takeaway:
—I have grown to appreciate the narrator. I did not like him at first, but he is actually perfect for this part.
—The author/DelMarco has a great sense of humor.
—There is a great balance of left wing/right wing ideology.
—I usually like an author’s work less and less the more I listen to it; but it is the opposite for Lawson—keep ’em coming!

Story
When the body of a fast-living young stockbroker is found in a shallow grave, suspicion first falls on a cuckolded policeman. Lieutenant Joe Gunther investigates the increasingly bizarre details of the crime, but he's too far behind events to prevent a second murder. Indeed, whoever is responsible always seems to be a few steps ahead, as if there's a leak in the police force. Sweltering August heat does nothing to calm the increasingly agitated town selectmen, who demand results.

A plodding, overly circuitous storyline coupled with enough similes and metaphors to choke a horse, made for an agonizing read. The overly detailed narration detracted from the novel.

Story
Drew Danner, a crime novelist with a house off L.A.'s storied Mulholland Drive, awakens in a hospital bed with a scar on his head and no memory of being found convulsing over his ex-fiancee's body the previous night. He was discovered holding a knife, her blood beneath his nails. He himself doesn't know whether he's guilty or innocent. To reconstruct the story, the writer must now become the protagonist, searching the corridors of his life and the city he loves.

There was no mystery here. I identified the culprit the first time the character was introduced. I’m sure most readers did. As for the narrator, his over the top dramatic interpretations worked for the Ayn Rand novels, but are downright silly and distracting in all the other fictional works he’s done.

Number-one New York Times best-selling author Harlan Coben set huge sales records with last year’s Six Years - and he’s poised to do it again in his next breathtaking stand-alone thriller. Harlan Coben, author of six consecutive instant number-one New York Times best sellers and a total of 24 award-winning, best-selling, and internationally acclaimed novels, returns with another ripped-from-real-life thriller full of impossibly high emotional stakes and the real-to-life characters for which he has become famous.

... I listened to the entire book was so I could write this review. The story itself was ridiculous. The dialogue was terrible and repetitive. I lost count at the number of times the main characters said “I don’t understand.” The narrator used so much unnecessary inflection that, even if the story had been a good one, it would have been ruined. Did the author really intend for the protagonist to come off as whiny, miserable, judgmental, and insecure as she was presented? Ms. LaVoy’s presentation was over the top and tiresome. She and Coben should offer purchasers of this audiobook a refund.

I was too distracted by the overuse of metaphors and similes, only a few of which were worth keeping in the dialogue, to fully enjoy the story. I also grew weary of every character showing confusion, or asking for clarification, ANY time a question was posed. So many better Coben novels to choose. Skip this one.

Story
Littleport, Maine, has always felt like two separate towns: an ideal vacation enclave for the wealthy, whose summer homes line the coastline, and a simple harbor community for the year-round residents whose livelihoods rely on service to the visitors. Typically, fierce friendships never develop between a local and a summer girl - but that’s just what happens with visitor Avery Greer and Littleport resident Sadie Loman. Each summer for almost a decade, the girls are inseparable - until Sadie is found dead.
