About this listen

When the body of a fast-living young stockbroker is found in a shallow grave, suspicion first falls on a cuckolded policeman. Lieutenant Joe Gunther investigates the increasingly bizarre details of the crime, but he's too far behind events to prevent a second murder. Indeed, whoever is responsible always seems to be a few steps ahead, as if there's a leak in the police force. Sweltering August heat does nothing to calm the increasingly agitated town selectmen, who demand results.

I'm enjoying the Joe Gunther series. The narrator portrays Gunther perfectly. I'm a New Englander, so I can appreciate all the description and landmarks.
The stories are quite detailed. If you don't like reads with alot of details. Then this series may not be for you...

Another intriguing mystery by Archer Mayor. More than a little unbelievable but a fun and exciting listen nonetheless.

Could not stop listening. Mayor is a truly gifted writer. Taylorson is an absolute wizard voice actor. The details of the story, plot, narrative and sidebars are exceptionally well done and backed by obvious impressive research. Hint: pay attention there are a lot of names and possibilities leading up to a fine finale. so glad there are 30 more... 👍👍

Magnificent Mystery...!!!

Another great one

I love Bosch but if i had met Joe first Bosch wouldn’t have had a chance. Proof that an “imperfect” character doesn’t have to be hated to be hung ho. And the twists never stop coming. Tom Taylorson is quickly becoming a favorite narrator as well. Finally a series worthy of re-listens.

Better than Bosch

Another great book by Mayor and read by Taylorson. WARNING: If you're not old enough to remember the 80s and only know the current TV version of "evidence collection", you want everything spoon fed to you and don't like to pay attention, and you want instant gratification, you won't like this one. Or any of Mayor's books actually. Do a little research as to who the author actually is and you'll understand why he writes like he does. Unlike most screen writers writing cop shows, Mayor actually knows what he is writing about. If you have a short attention span, you won't catch the subtle shifts in the investigation and won't remember who the various characters are.

One thing I really like about Mayor's books is the details. TV and some current "crime writers" would have you think cops solve every crime in an hour. In reality, it can take days, weeks, months, years to solve some crimes. I like that these books give us such a detailed look into police policies, procedure, and thinking. They may have been written in the 80's but much of what was then is still true now. I personally think the books get better and better with each one. This one keeps you on your toes, both as to who actually did it and why. I liked meeting the rest of the Joe's team in this book, and some of the town leaders. I hope they pop up in future books.

Keeps You Guessing to The End

Like the other three - lots of twists and turns and false leads and possible subjects. I did suspect the culprit, though. Joe has more close encounters with death than anyone should.

Totally entertaining and so well researched. I missed a few exits on my travels as I listened

This is the 4th Archie Mayor story I've listened to and I think it's the best so far. Lots of twists and turns.
