Good but has flaws
Reviewed: 07-10-25
I enjoyed the book but had a few gripes about the story. when Max returns he's already basically a S rank so he sets limits on himself to not stand out but it only applies to 1 situation because he secludes himself after and doesn't show off till he hits S+ power and starts kicking butt. The other gripe would be Momo returns and Max finally decides he makes a move on her but practically 5 minutes later plot happens and Max is sent away. It just feels like the plot focuses on one thing then rushes to the next with no in-between for stuff to be built up. Like specifically Max gets a fourth path but besides mentioning it I couldn't tell you what the concrete benefits of it are because it's not explained past saying Max is now probably the only 4 path challenger in the multiverse. I could probably TLDR the book and not really miss out on any specifics because this book feels like it's all meat and no potatoes.

If I'm being completely honest I didn't like Freddy as a character, he reminds me a little to much of myself not the tortured past but the self doubt and loathing with a bitter and jaded view of the world but little by little he came out of his shell and I began to like Freddy but the truly ironic thing is I put this down found book 3 on royalroad and read ahead a little because I had a issue with something and HOLY CRAP HE PEAKS in book 3 it made me eager to continue and I can't wait till book 3 his arrival in the Northern Belt is just wow brutal

The Path beyond the ascension
Reviewed: 06-09-25
Here we are Matt Lizz and Aster have completed the path of ascension and have completed the dream of any child in the empire that leaves the question what next. Thankfully it doesn't seem that the end of the series is going to end soon. I mean they only hit tier 25 and that's not even halfway to tier 50 in terms of time spent on the path. I am expecting a huge power boost in book 10 with the accolades they've built up and the mountains of treasures they've built up and have been forbidden from touching by path rules I see their chains breaking and we haven't even seen the full potential of the trio yet. I do hope the author slows the story down a bit we skipped years and years of training that was summarized in a few sentences but I would be nice getting a book that's just a side story of the shenanigans they got up to in the time skips. This has been my favorite series and I hope it gets many more books in the future I'll be there day 1 of release to enjoy them

Macronomicon has some serious talent the way he crafts a story. You think that it's just a happy go lucky story where Paradox gets everything going his way until blamo it's shown that some people don't like the way paradox is undercutting everyone. but the way the story gives you a false sense that it keeps the classic formula that the bad guy reacts and then gets trounced by the good guy and nobody dies and when that script is flipped and someone *Dies* the way it shifted my perspective after beautifully triggered a oh-no part of my imagination and makes you go who's next is some masterful story design. I can't wait for the 3rd and Final book to be finished and I'll eagerly await SBT's high quality work

This book isn't what you think it'll be about when going in. the Revelations, the hidden lore that answers questions from book 1 and the ending it all came together perfectly and it had me grinning wickedly at how Avo's plan came together to ruin mirror head. I can't wait for book 3 I'd instantly drop what I'll be currently listening to in a heartbeat when it drops

FANTASTIC
Reviewed: 05-03-25
I didn't know what I was getting into with the regular description of this. What I got was a world built on the shaky lore of the "Backrooms" but with the flair cranked up to 11 to the point it might as well be called something else because it's better than the og backrooms. the world is full of danger and one second Dan is walking through a weed store and the next the trippy paintings are coming to life to claim a piece of his rear end. it's a perfect blend with magic but real world objects. so not pure fantasy not pure realism but a blend where drain-o is a caustic acid spell and a squirt hose + a wet floor sign = a pressure washer spell with 9000 psi. it's all very unique and I can't wait to see what the author cooks up with his world of nightmares and fantasy

Ever since I came across this from a random royal road ad I was interested. I had only read the first 10 chapters and decided I'd wait till a audiobook got released. after following and many months later I was delighted to see an announcement of the release of this audiobook and it was a smash hit. I was familiar with the narrators from their work with saintess summons skeletons and they did good work. I eagerly await book 2

Story
When the cultivators came to Earth, they destroyed our entire civilization in a matter of hours. Armies fell, cities burned, and that was before the moon turned red and filled our world with monsters. Now, over a decade later, what's left of humanity slaves under the heels of our Qi-infused masters. The luckiest of us might even become one of them, they say—if we serve the Dynasty well enough and harness the power of Qi. But I want none of that. I'm sick of serving, and I want nothing to do with their world. Instead, I want them to pay for what they did to mine.

I liked this book but I also had some issues. the obvious high points were when Max is in the middle of battle digging for every ounce of strength in is body to pull a win by the skin of his teeth. but with all highs there are lows and I almost dropped this because of them. while I'm glad I stuck through it also has some awkward moments that almost physically hurt to sit through and it took every fiber of my being not to just skip ahead a bit
