About this listen

Noclip in, no way out ...

All Dan wants is to find a way home. He'd settle for a beer, a bite to eat, and a place to sleep off his hangover.

But, in an endless, ever-changing dungeon cobbled together from twisted carnivals, abandoned shopping malls, janky laundromats, and condemned insane asylums, getting a bit of shut-eye is harder than it sounds.

Dan has accidentally "Noclipped" into the Backrooms—a bizarro, extra-dimensional Alice-in-Wonderland world, overrun with horrific nightmare creatures known as the Dwellers. No one ever gets out. Hell, forget about leaving, if Dan wants to survive the week, he's going to need to harness the strange game-like magic of the Backrooms, make some very sketchy allies, and carve out a little safe haven to call his own.

And he's going to need to do it fast because Dan is being hunted. The Flayed Monarch of the 999th floor has marked him for death and no one walks away from the Skinless Court with their hide intact ...

“The book is a f***ing delight. I enjoyed the absolute hell out of it and think it's an excellent use of pop culture to make something fun and horrific and awesome.” (Eric Ugland, author of the Good Guys and Bad Guys series)

“Buckle up, buttercup! James Hunter takes you on a balls-to-the-wall adventure that's as insane as it is awesome.” (Jez Cajiao, author of the Arise and Rise of Mankind series)

"Discount Dan is a fun, fast-paced read with awesome game mechanics, surprising humor, and a brutal adventure you won’t want to put down!" (Dakota Krout, author of Completionist Chronicles, Full Murder Hobo, and The Divine Dungeon)

Making a cohesive story out of the absurd.

When I picked up this book I didn't think I would like it. I am happy to say that is not the case. I enjoyed it from the first page to the last. Cannot wait till the next book it combines rpg elements in an unfamiliar environment.

Real treasure

I was a little sceptical going in to this one, but holy heck was I sucked in in no time flat.
The Title character is fun, relatable and believable, his situation, totally unbelievable, but that's very much the point, isn't it? :)

Honestly some of the best praise I can give this book is that it gives me real Dungeon Crawler Carl vibes, but at the same time it has it's own personality, it's not a ripoff, it's the potential to be something great if it just gets the right traction.

As to Narration, Steve is a powerhouse in his own right, the amount of noises and voices that comes out of that dudes mouth makes me worry for his long term health ( and be very pleased for his wife with how much control he has )

A fun and funny horror show

First off, the book does have several similarities to dungeon crawler Carl. That being said, it is its own story and you start seeing that around the mid point. Overall it’s a fun, funny, adventure horror with base building elements. If that’s your shtick then this will be a good book to spend time. I’m looking forward to the next one.

Genuienly Enjoyed this

I will admit i thought this was gonna be a shameless DCC ripeoff and yes there is some influences I feel in this book, but it did manage yo make itself unique. Dan is great but hands down I love Croc who is just the yesman from fallout new vegas and i love that. I had a blast with this. I cant wait for the next.

Great book, outstanding audio performance

A wonderful debut of Discount Dan's adventures. Classic dungeon-crawling-style LitRPG on the video-game-like side of the genre. It's in a similar vein as Dungeon Crawler Carl, with a lot of parallels, but those are mostly superficial.
Yeah, he's got a talking quasi-animal sidekick.
Yeah, he's trapped in a dungeon.
Yeah, he swears like a sailor.
But this is something else. Crazy characters, silly situations, nail-biting fights, and even some dread-inducing scenes that feel more akin to a horror/thriller. Some great characters and great moments.
The reason this was a 4 vs. a 5 is mostly just because for everything that shines in this book (Dan, Croc, pac man, goosey gander) there are things that feel blah (Most side characters, other bosses/subbosses).
If you're a fan of the LitRPG genre, this is definitely a book to check out though.

Steve Campbell's performance in this is great. Easily in the top two of audio book performers. so if you're on the fence about the story, let his performance be the thing that pushes you over to checking it out.

Fun in the backrooms

Loved the inclusion of backrooms lore with Litepg mechanics. others likened it to Dungeon crawler carls, but to me this is so much better no annoying popularity contest, just survival and adventure. with all the liminal horror of the backrooms. no cumbersome "marketing" lore dumps that take up much of DCC. you don't get straight answers form the incoprencable liminal superspace eldrich horror, because that would very much defeat the point of an incoprencable liminal superspace eldrich horror.

Cool

I’m feeling a lot of Stanley Parable getting channeled here as well with the British overseer and the office business building ~ contractor setting. DCC & other lit rpg nods too. Very fun!

Seriously awesome!

if you've just finished book 7 of Dungeon Crawler Caaaarl (that kills people, Caaaarl) and want something else with that irreverent mix of humor and horror, buddy you found it. Steve Campbell does a fantastic job, and you can tell hearing him read it that he thoroughly enjoyed this one. I'm pretty sure you will too.

No-clip into this one, it's great!
