Wow!!! What a story. It kept me on the edge of my seat, and sometimes it made me stay up late at night to finish a chapter. The narrator was on point, and there were some sections of the book that made me cringe, cry and stop reading to digest what I had just heard. All in all, a must-read!

I have enjoyed the series but it seems to be getting darker and darker with every book. I will continue it I need to take a break for a minute to clear my head of such dark intentions, sadness and so many murders. That is not to say I will never return to needing some gore in my reading life.

Not Too Bad

The book was okay. The narrator was not good. The story was not very believable, but it was entertaining. I enjoyed the written text more than the audio, but I wanted to knit while listening to a “knitting” murder mystery. This is a long series; in this first book, the main character does and gets away with more than is reasonable for solving a murder, but the backstory is a lot of fun with the knitting, weaving, and spinning atmosphere. I would love to create some beautiful pieces while listening, but if I cannot put up with the narrator, I may discontinue the series. I am going to give book two a try.
I bumped it up to 3.5 stars because of the patterns and recipe at the end of the book. Nice touch.

Story
To his customers and neighbors on 125th street, Ray Carney is an upstanding salesman of reasonably priced furniture, making a decent life for himself and his family. He and his wife Elizabeth are expecting their second child, and if her parents on Striver's Row don't approve of him or their cramped apartment across from the subway tracks, it's still home. Few people know he descends from a line of uptown hoods and crooks, and that his façade of normalcy has more than a few cracks in it. Cracks that are getting bigger all the time.

I loved the narrator, Dion Graham. Outstanding work! He brought all of the characters to life. There were some fascinating characters in this book. I liked some of them less than good ole Carney, but, hey, you can't like everybody. It is worth reading; I enjoyed the audio immensely. The text is just as entertaining.

What an incredible ride. Sometimes the narrator made it hard for me to know who was talking but otherwise, the suspense was top notch and all the twists and turns had me a little dizzy. I loved the recluse mountain man; he made me smile and laugh out loud a few times, although, admittedly, there was not much to laugh or smile about in this book.

This book is entirely different from book one so there are no mafia type mobsters and hit men. That does not mean there is no intrigue. There is plenty. Billy Beckett is one of those fellows that reminds you of a cat. A cat with nine lives. Since this is book two, he has used up two of his nine lives. Only one more book in the series to go so I guess Billy only has three lives. He sure does know how to land on his feet.

The end of a great series. I loved all of these nine books. The narrator was fantastic and gave each character a distinctive personality. The characters were very vivid and colorfully eccentric. I’m looking forward to another series by this author. I will certainly miss Mr. Joe Dillard, attorney at law.

If you love a good whodunnit with nasty and lovable characters thrown together in awkward situations, this murder muster is for you. Not too long, which is refreshing; and not boring at all. There are no slow sections. You learn about the history of the people and locations of incidents as you need to without a separate chapter on what kind of grades he or she got in elementary school and how green the grass is and the low or high humidity. You find out and hear about these things as additional info along the way. It does contribute to setting of the scenes without making too much of it.
While reading this book, back and forth on audio and in print, I was looking forward to book 2. Forward to book two. Needless to say I was very sorry to learn Mr Scott Pratt passed away and this may be his last book. It is book 1 so I truly hope that book 2 was completed before his demise. Tom Campbell and Scott Pratt were an absolutely wonderful author/narrator team. I would always whisper sync each book on his series to get the best of both worlds. Lukas and Brooke are two characters I would love to get to know more of, they have great chemistry together and it would be a great tribute to the Pratt legacy to have one more book. Rip Mr. Pratt.

This book is magnificent!! It is very intellectual and deeply spiritual in equal measure. I have never read anything like it. It sings a song that is as beautiful as it is haunting. The singing comes at the end after all of the living and dying has been completed. The singing is done by the next generation telling the story in song of the Night Women that suffered so they could have life. I have the chills, yet I feel empowered to be from a legacy of Night Women. Ashe.
