Breathy narrator
Reviewed: 04-24-22
I'm gonna have to reserve real judgment on this until I hear the 2nd book.
The narrator is actually quite good (genuinely), you just have to listen to her for a few minutes to get over the very deep breaths she takes directly into the microphone.
Another comment said something about this being a slow burn, which apparently must pick up in book 2 as the "romance" has yet to go anywhere.
This really is more of a "set the scene" book for the series, which isn't a terrible thing I suppose as it is rather short, so again I'll reserve judgment until the next book!

Story
A soldier raised as heir to an empire, Zarrah is motivated by two truths. The first is that the Veliant family murdered her mother. And the second is that her pursuit of vengeance will put every last one of them in their graves. The Endless War between Maridrina and Valcotta has raged for generations, leaving thousands of Zarrah’s people dead and countless more orphaned. So when she’s given command of the contested city of Nerastis, Zarrah is prepared to do whatever it takes to destroy the Maridrinian forces who oppose her. And to kill the Veliant prince who leads them.

Awesome story, not so great narrator
Reviewed: 01-16-22
The female narrator is perfectly fine (nothing astonishing but she's good) the male narrator is so monotone while reading the story bits they might as well have used a text to speech reader!! He's marginally better reading dialogue, his portrayal of Magpie and a few others actually quite good, but everything else is painful. He changes how names are pronounced in the same sentence and constantly mispronounces Woman as Women (among a few other really bad missteps)
I'm not sure what was going on in the direction or how they missed some of his worse blunders but I seriously hope they get someone new for the next book.
Speaking of which the story was wonderful!! I honestly enjoyed it better than the first two books (which were good don't get me wrong) I'm highly looking forward to the next!! (even with the bad acting I was hooked, and I suppose even if he's back I'll weather it!)

Story
A queen now in exile as a traitor, Lara has watched Ithicana be conquered by her own father, helpless to do anything to stop the destruction. But when she learns her husband, Aren, has been captured in battle, Lara knows there is only one reason her father is keeping him alive: as bait for his traitorous daughter. And it is bait she fully intends to take. Risking her life to the Tempest Seas, Lara returns to Ithicana with a plan not only to free its king, but for liberating the Bridge Kingdom from her father’s clutches using his own weapons: the sisters whose lives she spared.

Have the other reviews have never read anything??
Reviewed: 12-29-21
I can't believe all the reviews that are giving low stars because it was a "cliffhanger"
It's no more a cliffhanger than any other book series has ever had in the past! It ends with things left to do to continue the series but it has an ending. No one is left literally dangling, it's very obvious there's too much story left to tell! Where would the other reviewers have liked the story to end??
Anyways I highly enjoyed the story! The narrators were alright, the female did a fair job (not the best ever but honestly not bad!) While I found the male voice a little wooden and monotonous, he wasn't terrible especially while actually voicing the individual characters.
All and all enjoyed it and am looking forward to the next one!

For as long as Fei can remember, there has been no sound in her village, where rocky terrain and frequent avalanches prevent residents from self-sustaining. Fei and her people are at the mercy of a zipline that carries food up the treacherous cliffs from Beiguo, a mysterious faraway kingdom. When villagers begin to lose their sight, deliveries from the zipline shrink and many go hungry. Fei’s home, the people she loves, and her entire existence is plunged into crisis, under threat of darkness and starvation.

While I never heard the original narrator this one does a good job! A little breathy but I think that's just poor direction more than anything else as the voice acting is perfect! Can't wait to start the next one!

Chosen from birth to usher in a new era, Poppy’s life has never been her own. The life of the Maiden is solitary. Never to be touched. Never to be looked upon. Never to be spoken to. Never to experience pleasure. Waiting for the day of her Ascension, she would rather be with the guards, fighting back the evil that took her family, than preparing to be found worthy by the gods. But the choice has never been hers.

I mean who doesn't love a little predictability in their romance! Also I'm happy to report that Steina Nelson does a much better job of this book than she did of the most recent Court of Thorn and roses book! that one must have had a bad director because she actually is a fairly decent narrator!! can't wait to get started on the next book!

Nesta Archeron has always been prickly-proud, swift to anger, and slow to forgive. And ever since being forced into the Cauldron and becoming High Fae against her will, she's struggled to find a place for herself within the strange, deadly world she inhabits. Against the sweeping backdrop of a world seared by war and plagued with uncertainty, Nesta and Cassian battle monsters from within and without as they search for acceptance - and healing - in each other's arms.

Miss the old narrator but the story was wonderful!
Reviewed: 03-17-21
The narrator of the previous book was amazing, this one leaves a lot to be desired. While she does a fantastic job in some places, for the most part she's just way too overdramatic and sultry the entire time.
As for the story? Amazing as always! I've been waiting for these two's story and Maas did not disappoint! I'm honestly happy with the shift in vocabulary and uh...tameness lol. I often had thought to myself "let Cassian say f*** dangit" so I'm glad the censorship was finally dropped! Definitely not for young readers but just as good as all the rest!

I adore Amanda as a reader!! Everyone here is bitter about it for some reason but I often forgot a) that I was listening to one person and b) that I was listening at all! So drawn into the story and emotions of it all was I by her reading!
The book itself, while stressful, is wonderful! Just like the previous book it shows exactly what PTSD is like for different people (to everyone complaining, I'd like to see you go through what they all did and come out fine and logical on the other side!) and how each person gets through traumatic events, while giving a fantastic story over it all! Can't praise it enough and can't wait to start the next one!
