Story
Detective Lauren Pengelly has only been part of the Penzance police force for less than two years, but that’s enough time to know that the sleepy Cornish town doesn’t see many murders. So, when the bones of a woman with a hole in her skull are discovered behind a derelict cottage, she immediately assumes the worst. Rallying her team, Lauren is flooded with a strange sense of relief when the bones turn out to be almost twenty years old, not a recent victim. But it quickly turns to dread when she receives her second heart-stopping call of the day–a little girl, Isla, has been kidnapped.

Good Ending

I liked this book from start to finish. The characters were well developed yet the author left plenty of room for many more in the series.
A great book with no sex, drugs, or rock roll and no profanity yet it's enjoyable.

Story
The Swedish National Crime Unit receives a video of a young woman in her home, clearly unaware that she's being watched. Soon after the tape is received, the woman's body is found horrifically mutilated. With the arrival of the next, similar video, the police understand that the killer is toying with them, warning of a new victim, knowing there's nothing they can do.

Story
We think we know what an autocratic state looks like: There is an all-powerful leader at the top. He controls the police. The police threaten the people with violence. There are evil collaborators, and maybe some brave dissidents. But in the 21st century, that bears little resemblance to reality. Nowadays, autocracies are underpinned not by one dictator, but by sophisticated networks composed of kleptocratic financial structures, surveillance technologies, and professional propagandists, all of which operate across multiple regimes, from China to Russia to Iran.

This is another Applebaum audible that I will listen to several more times to get all I can from her. This is a well-researched, well-written, well-presented book by one of my favorite authors.
Much of the information I "sort of knew" but she put it all together in a way that makes it entertaining and informative at the same time. I also enjoy her reading her own work.
I recommend this to everyone.

Story
Haller is a Lincoln Lawyer, a criminal defense pro who operates out of the backseat of his Lincoln Town Car, to defend clients at the bottom of the legal food chain. It's no wonder that he is despised by cops, prosecutors, and even some of his own clients. But an investigator is murdered for getting too close to the truth and Haller quickly discovers that his search for innocence has taken him face to face with a kind of evil as pure as a flame.

Getting better each book
Reviewed: 07-07-22
I have to say first that I was thrown for a loop because John Heffernan was not the narrator. Finlay Robertson is not just a different person but narrates completely differently which made George Cross almost seem like a different person. Okay, I got used to it but it took several chapters, and, just like the other books, I listened to it 3 times.
The story is great, the characters become much more familiar, DS Cross's hobby gets more interesting and he seems to be better at normal communication.
Oh, the ending is a killer. I can't wait for the next book.

DS Cross and his entire team, his father, and the local priest are in full form and getting better. The author paints each character so vividly I can see and hear them. As with the first book, the ending is more than expected. I had to hear this 3 or 4 times as well and have learned something new each time.

Brandi Carlile was born into a musically gifted, impoverished family on the outskirts of Seattle and grew up in a constant state of change, moving from house to house, trailer to trailer, 14 times in as many years. Though imperfect in every way, her dysfunctional childhood was as beautiful as it was strange, and as nurturing as it was difficult. At the age of five, Brandi contracted bacterial meningitis, which almost took her life, leaving an indelible mark on her formative years and altering her journey into young adulthood.
