Publisher's summary

Introducing your new crime thriller fix: Bristol detective DS George Cross, champion of the outsider, the voiceless and the dispossessed.

DS George Cross can be rude, difficult and awkward with people. But his unfailing logic and relentless pursuit of justice means his conviction rate is the best on the force. When a ravaged body is found in a local demolition site, it is up to Cross to piece together the truth from whatever fragments he can find.

The demolition began at dawn. Walls knocked over. Twisted pipes uprooted. Window frames smashed. A dead body unearthed....

DS Cross has little to go on, but from the faint tan lines on the body and strange scars on his forearms, an identity gradually emerges: a young man, an amateur cyclist, a supply of performance-enhancing drugs. But what led this man to his death? Cross mounts an investigation that will uncover jealousy, ambition and a family tearing itself apart - an investigation that could cost him his career....

Great writing

Well written, excellent character development and spot on about characterization of someone who is functional and on the spectrum.

George the Cyclist

DS Cross and his entire team, his father, and the local priest are in full form and getting better. The author paints each character so vividly I can see and hear them. As with the first book, the ending is more than expected. I had to hear this 3 or 4 times as well and have learned something new each time.

An unusual but believable detective!

This detective is evolving as the series progresses but his discernment never falters. The crimes are believable and almost sad in their humanity. The stories are as well written as they are compelling and the reader’s voice was just right.

A Fascinating Whodunit

The author is back with my favorite characters: Detective Sergeant George Cross, a misunderstood, unconventional loner, and a stickler for details, his partner, Detective Sergeant Josie Ottey, who always has his back, and Alice Mackenzie, an investigator trainee who realizes that Cross’ peculiar ways are the least of her problems. The plot brings some new authentic, relatable, and complex characters, explanatory locations, which begins in Bristol, UK, and expands to Greece, more drama, twists, and turns, secrets and lies, drug misuse, and manipulation. This page-turning story will keep you guessing to the very end, a conclusion that I never saw coming. The relentless rapport between Cross and Ottey and how they conduct their awkward interviewing skills with suspects can be strenuous but at the same time humorous. I am looking forward to reading the third installment of the DS Cross Mysteries.
John Heffernan was fantastic with the delivery of the story

Cross’ genius.

Well delivered, and a delight to listen to.

The genius of the who-done it. I thrive at the unexpectedness of the ‘revelations’ by Cross’ character.

Really enjoyable police procedural

The lead detective’s Asperger’s Syndrome makes him high functioning, very intuitive and detail oriented which the writer conveys skillfully. I skipped book 1 and plan to read book 3 next. George Cross is an intriguing, unique character and I would highly recommend this series to other fans of crime fiction.

So Fascinating

Another intriguing mystery that Cross and Josie try to solve as a team, even though they are polar opposites. I love how Josie really strives to understand Cross’s many idiosyncrasies, but yet is human enough to get frustrated with what comes across as rude or inconsiderate behavior. But Cross truly is trying in his own way to be more socially acceptable, but he just gets so involved with trying to solve the murder mystery that he automatically reverts back to his normal personality. I love these stories and am always surprised at the conclusion. This narrator is outstanding, and I am a little hesitant to go to the third one because I know it’s going to be a different narrator, but I have already used my credit for the next chapter in this entertaining series.
