I purchased this book because Frieda McFadden gave a great review. I would not say this is truly a psych thriller. It’s more of a mystery. I would have loved for the battered character to have gotten justice and a better life in the end.

The storyline is very unlikely and far out there. It definitely surprised me but it’s so shocking that the storyline is something that would never ever happen in real life.

I enjoyed listening to this story as it reminded me of my ex’s family and their dealings. I didn’t realize how common this story is for many. The saying is true: poverty corrupts good values… it’s not an excuse but it sheds like on how desperate people are in their conditions to survive.

Very nicely produced! The story is a close ressemblance of Stephen King’s Carry nonetheless… which is unfortunate.

A memoir of a real and honest recovery

I relapsed with anorexia during the pandemic. It started out with me wanting to lose weight and to get healthy. Just as Jackie, my first bout with ED was high school. I wanted to fit in and stand out. I admired others and only when I started to lose weight people noticed me. Years, I’ve battled until inhd my kids and it came back. I’ve read countless ED novels and memoirs and very few I will find as real and honest. Jackie’s story is real and honest as recovering from anorexia is not at all fast and easy as most memoirs make it seem. Most memoirs will end with “one day it all went away …” without ever mentioning the true struggles to desire to remain healthy while dealing with all the changes and newly adopted habits. It’s a battle no matter how far into recovery you are. That’s reality. I appreciate her story and her reading it. You experience first hand the pain and how hard beating an ED is. I appreciate how she elaborated on the ideas of what an ED is “supposed to look like” and her battles to maintain that image and to want to be the skinniest person in the room. This is my current journey as a minority with an ED. I cried several times and I’m not cryer. I applaud Jackie in her journey and pure honesty. Thank you for sharing your story! I feel seen.

Typical story of a girl with an ED

It was okay. It was the clichéd story of a girl with anorexia who « wakes up » one day and realizes she wants to live. I have anorexia and that is not at all reality nor how it works. I was a bit disappointed.

It’s a memoir

It’s memoir—real life events. It’s not a novel. So for people to rate it as such is not fair. I have an eating disorder. I am 35 and it re-emerged after having one in my teens. Typically people think only teens suffer. It’s false. Adults suffer too. And it’s much harder as the author rights. Though I didn’t have a privileged life as the author, her struggles just as everyone else is very real. Have compassion.

I survived anorexia as a teen. During the pandemic, I relapsed. This book has been part of my recovery journey as I seek normalcy and to regain control over my life. Very touching and heartbreaking story—one that is told too often.
