Story
Healthy boundaries. We all know we should have them - in order to achieve work/life balance, cope with toxic people, and enjoy rewarding relationships with partners, friends, and family. But what do "healthy boundaries" really mean - and how can we successfully express our needs, say "no", and be assertive without offending others? Licensed counselor, sought-after relationship expert, and one of the most influential therapists on Instagram Nedra Glover Tawwab demystifies this complex topic for today's world.

Story
The Poisonwood Bible is a story told by the wife and four daughters of Nathan Price, a fierce, evangelical Baptist who takes his family and mission to the Belgian Congo in 1959. They carry with them everything they believe they will need from home, but soon find that all of it - from garden seeds to Scripture - is calamitously transformed on African soil. What follows is a suspenseful epic of one family’s tragic undoing and remarkable reconstruction over the course of three decades in postcolonial Africa.

Barbara Kingsolver's way with words blows me away again and again - smart, funny, beautiful, poetic. And to create a story as rich as this incorporating the voices of 5 narrators(!)/perspectives? I don't know how she does it. I loved this. And the actual narration by Dean Robertson is simply fabulous. I highly recommend this.

Story
Let’s face it: we all want a seat at the cool table, a great job, and loads of money. But most of us won’t be able to achieve this widely accepted, black-or-white, definition of winning, which makes us feel like failures, that we’re destined to a life of loserdom. That’s the conventional wisdom. It’s also crap, according to comedian and cult hero Chris Gethard, who knows a thing of two about losing. Failing is an art form, he argues; in fact, it’s the only the way we’re ever going to discover who we are, what we really want, and how to live the kind of life we only dreamed about.

This audio is a really wonderful balance of comedy and inspiration. I can't imagine that reading this one would be nearly as fun as listening to Chris tell his own stories and express his thoughts in this audio version. Prior to listening to this I wasn't familiar with Chris or his work. Loved this and highly recommend.

I think this is going to revolutionize my life. These concepts are not radical, but I haven't heard anything like this before. And they are presented and articulated with such clarity and in a way that underscores how making some small changes in how we listen and communicate could truly change many, many lives. I am grateful for this book. I'm already putting it to practice and it feels really good. Thank you!

Story
Social scientist Brené Brown has ignited a global conversation on courage, vulnerability, shame, and worthiness. Her pioneering work uncovered a profound truth: Vulnerability—the willingness to show up and be seen with no guarantee of outcome—is the only path to more love, belonging, creativity, and joy. But living a brave life is not always easy: We are, inevitably, going to stumble and fall.

Brene being brilliant
Reviewed: 01-05-19
Practical and vulnerable, rich with personal stories and compilations of well-curated data, Brene once again gives us a roadmap for how we can move towards a more enriched experience of life, this time specifically after we've taken a tumble. Rising strong addresses a seemingly minute portion of the "man in the arena" quote, but one that is a total game-changer. I loved this book. I will revisit it often. I am very grateful for her work.

If you seek inspiration in this New Year, or merely want to be reminded what it’s like to have a family at the helm of this country aligned with goodness and integrity, in want of a more unified America and a more unified world, do yourself a favor. And though (paper) books are great, hearing Michelle’s voice read her words is a comfort I can’t quite describe. See for yourself.
