If you’re a fan, this is an excellent story.

No spoiler alerts. But this is a complex story that was more difficult to un braid than many of the previous stories. Two women married to difficult and possibly abusive men, and the death of one of those husbands with the blame going on the other husband. Well, worth a listen for the twist at the end.

Story
Edgar does not cheat in flower shows. He might use a magically enhanced serum, but anyone could do that. It's not his fault the other competitors don’t know magic exists! But when the Ivy House crew goes to the pre-show to support him, it becomes clear that someone should've been watching Edgar much more carefully. What he's done is way worse than overgrown flora. While Jessie is dealing with that, she gets a shock as she discovers photos of her ex with his girlfriend…turned fiancée. And while the flood of emotions can be ignored, the desire to show off Austin on social media is not.

How little plot there really was. This is really a story about the relationships and not about an actual storyline.

There was a lot of sweetness between the two main characters, and a side story that looks like a flirtation. But beyond that, there really isn’t much story going on in this particular book. And that’s not necessarily a bad thing, it’s light and fluffy, a little high school-ish, Things like that are appealing to you, it could be a lot of fun. But definitely not anywhere near a favorite of mine, and I won’t be listening to it again.

Skip the bad summary in the first few chapters.

I almost gave up on this book when it started with a terrible catch-up summary about how the characters Maude and Arland, the Marshal of House Krahr had met and sparred in the previous book. But I am thrilled I stayed with the story because once the current story begins, the entire book blossoms. It is filled with longing, creature machinations and intrigue, courage, humor, and a fabulous and creative plot against the house of Krahr. It is so much fun, I keep rewinding the story so I can listen more closely to the scenes. And they are so well written that I feel as if I can see them from afar. If you have liked the other books in this series, please listen past the rehash - it will be well worth your time.

Story
Thirty-five years old, fresh off the bus from New York City, and nursing a shattered heart, Anna Pigeon takes a decidedly unglamorous job as a seasonal employee of the Glen Canyon National Recreational Area. On her day off, she goes hiking into the park never to return. Her co-workers think she’s simply moved on - her cabin is cleaned out and her things gone. Anna herself wakes up, trapped at the bottom of a dry natural well, naked, without supplies and no clear memory of how she got into this situation. As she slowly pieces together her memory, it soon becomes clear that someone has trapped her there....

A slow start but great twists and turns
Reviewed: 08-04-17
Would you consider the audio edition of The Rope to be better than the print version?
I enjoyed the audio version, the narrator is perfect for the characters and creates a Lake Powell not to be forgotten.
What other book might you compare The Rope to and why?
I read most of Nevada Barrs books but what was great about this one is that it is a prequel - the story of how Anne Pigeon decided to become a Ranger.
What does Joyce Bean bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Joyce is able (in voice) to both create the scene and also give a clear emotional sense of each of the characters. She is easy to listen to and follow.
Any additional comments?
What I enjoyed best about this book is the crazy twists and turns. It was nearly impossible until the end to understand the "why" and "who" of the mystery. The con is that it is hard to believe this many unfortunate things could happen to one person in so short a time.
