Story
Coexisting but conflicting needs create self-sabotaging behaviors. This is why we resist efforts to change, often until they feel completely futile. But by extracting crucial insight from our most damaging habits, building emotional intelligence by better understanding our brains and bodies, releasing past experiences at a cellular level, and learning to act as our highest potential future selves, we can step out of our own way and into our potential.

I was so taken by surprise and learned so much reading this book that I listened to it again immediately after finishing it the first time. I'm currently on pause while I put into practice every strategy to eradicate self-sabotage. When I'm ready i’ll move on to the next Brianna Weist book but wow, just wow. Highly recommend.

Story
Relationships have always been essential to human survival. Our bodies and brains are programmed to seek out connection, whether familial, romantic, or platonic. And yet, these vital bonds are often at the root of our deepest suffering. While our hearts are primed for compassionate connection, our nervous systems—which store all our past hurts and disappointments—are wired for threat and negativity.

I’ve read the two prior titles from this author. This book however, How To Be The Love You Seek, helped me identify the ego story which opened me up to more healing than I thought possible. The story is written as a How To guide, problem, solution & examples. Forever grateful. Definitely Recommend.

It’s good but…
Reviewed: 04-24-23
I enjoyed feeling connected by hearing her story however, what I didn’t like about the book and what I generally don’t like about Peloton (which I love) are the preaching (not to be confused with motivating) moments. What works for one or even some is not the answer for all. Anyway, I’m happy that this beautiful woman is living HER truth. I wish that we all live in OUR OWN truths as well.

Story
Russ Harris offers a surprising solution to low self-confidence, shyness, and insecurity: Rather than trying to "get over" our fears, he says, the secret is to form a new and wiser relationship with them. Paradoxically, it's only when we stop struggling against our fearfulness that we begin to find lasting freedom from it.

Story
Master storyteller and satirist Kurt Vonnegut was one of the most in-demand commencement speakers of his time. For each occasion, Vonnegut’s words were unfailingly unique, insightful, and witty, and they stayed with audience members long after graduation. As edited by Dan Wakefield, this book reads like a narrative in the unique voice that made Vonnegut a hero to readers and listeners of all ages. At times hilarious, razor-sharp, freewheeling, and deeply serious, these reflections are ideal for anyone undergoing what Vonnegut would call their "long-delayed puberty ceremony".

Admittedly bias review…

Because I’m such a fan of Vonnegut’s perspective, in my opinion, he can do no wrong and it’s always greatly appreciated by me. “If this isn’t nice, what is?” Is a mantra for anyone looking to be grateful for what is. Further, the notion that most of us will make a bigger impact in our communities rather than the nation or world at large is liberating! What do we all need to be m/billionaires for? We don’t. What we have is enough. We are enough. And if that isn’t nice, what is?
Loved this collection of commencement speeches and will listen to them many times over.

Extraordinary things happen when we harness the power of both the brain and the heart. Growing up in the high desert of California, Jim Doty was poor, living with an alcoholic father and a mother chronically depressed and paralyzed by a stroke. Today he is the director of the Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education at Stanford University, of which the Dalai Lama is a founding benefactor.

Yes, not the best narration but the lessons abound. No matter how many times I nodded off because of the narrator’s performance (I am grateful as I’m sure this was no easy undertaking - but damn) when I woke up the gems were still flowing. The last 20ish minutes are worth listening too often as they’re jam-packed with the keys to life.
