Story
Man’s Search for Meaning is the chilling yet inspirational story of Viktor Frankl’s struggle to hold on to hope during the unspeakable horrors of his years as a prisoner in Nazi concentration camps. Between 1942 and 1945 Frankl labored in four different camps, including Auschwitz, while his parents, brother, and pregnant wife perished. Based on his own experience and the experiences of those he treated in his practice, Frankl argues that we cannot avoid suffering, but we can choose how to cope with it, find meaning in it, and move forward with renewed purpose.

Jonathan Haidt skillfully combines two genres-philosophical wisdom and scientific research-delighting the listener with surprising insights. The Lucifer Priciple is a revolutionary work that explores the intricate relationships among genetics, human behavior, and culture to put forth the thesis that "evil" is a by-product of nature's strategies for creation and that it is woven into our most basic biological fabric. Though this argument is not a new one - it has been brought forth by such great historical figures as St. Paul, Thomas Hobbes, and Raymond Dart - Howard Bloom here takes fresh data from a variety of sources and shapes it into a lens through which listeners can reinterpret the human experience.

The only man in history to complete elite training as a Navy SEAL, Army Ranger, and Air Force tactical air controller, he went on to set records in numerous endurance events.

Goggins is the result of what we imagine ourselves capable of when pushed to the very zenith of effort, willing to descend to the absolute nadir of being.
(I am looking forward to his streamlined version of himself when expletives are no longer necessary.)
It is astounding to consider he worked out in the laboratory of self-mastery what philosophers, psychologists and shaman only glean from years swimming in probity of thought: that man (when ground finely in the crucible of unbridled, unflinching life) consists of ineffable material, resulting in ceaseless wonder... sadly, nearly never noticed.

First published in 1930, Civilization and Its Discontents is one of the most influential works of pioneering psychologist Sigmund Freud. Sometimes Freud reaches too far, others not near enough.
Although his other work has been immensely articulate and nuanced, some parts of this one felt half-baked or cast-off--- as though these snippets were found separately and haphazardly fashioned together.
It's painful to critique such a brilliant and disciplined mind, one whose left shoe would remain mostly empty were I to step into it, but this one overall left me with a sense of less than rather than overflowing.
It has some decidedly insightful parts, I must say, but just not to the same degree of his other more robust and flourished works.

Story
Winner of the Pulitzer Prize in 1974 and the culmination of a life's work, The Denial of Death is Ernest Becker's brilliant and impassioned answer to the "why" of human existence. In bold contrast to the predominant Freudian school of thought, Becker tackles the problem of the vital lie: man's refusal to acknowledge his own mortality. In doing so, he sheds new light on the nature of humanity and issues a call to life and its living that still resonates more than 30 years after its writing.

While it is clear Becker greatly admired Otto Rank--- at times his references to Rank's work borders on advertisement--- his ability to fuse the findings of his and other notable pioneers work is incredibly insightful and thought provoking.
The depth of the book is found in the simplicity Becker brings to even the most complicated ideas.

Story
Originally published in German as Wandlungen und Symbole der Libido, this is the book that set Carl Jung on his independent path as a psychoanalytic theorist and explorer of the mysterious world of the unconscious mind of the individual and the mythological mind of humanity. He bases his work on an exploration of Miss Frank Miller's Quelques Faits d'Imagination Creatrice, demonstrating complex connections between Miller's self-portrait of her own dreams and fantasies and the world of myth, symbol, and religion.

Very well articulated, although I would have preferred to hear all foreign passages translated into English, instead of only most of them.
Can't remember what chapter it was, but found it highly interesting to hear the narrator practice a portion of the book several times attempting to get the words right: put a personal insight onto his otherwise highly polished renderings.
This analysis on the subject matter holds sway even all this time after it's first release.
Very difficult ground to cover in the unraveling of the self; difficult to maintain one's grasp of self in light of the necessary assault.
Although it makes one wish to run and hide, sticking it out to the final portion is required for one's sound mental health.

From the author of 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos comes a provocative hypothesis that explores the connection between what modern neuropsychology tells us about the brain and what rituals, myths, and religious stories have long narrated. A cutting-edge work that brings together neuropsychology, cognitive science, and Freudian and Jungian approaches to mythology and narrative, Maps of Meaning presents a rich theory that makes the wisdom and meaning of myth accessible to the critical modern mind.
