Story
Nothing about Semiramis's upbringing could have foretold her legacy. Born to a woman scorned by Aphrodite and raised as an orphan on the outskirts of an empire, Semiramis was never meant to hold power. But that does not mean she was not made for it. When she meets a young representative of the new Assyrian king a path unfolds before her, one that puts her in the midst of a brutal world and at the heart of two men raised as brothers—one who just happens to be king.

I really enjoyed the voice of the narrator. The pacing was great, and Semiramis is a strong female character.

I think Semiramis portrays strength that women today still need to rise up and take our power.

Story
Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

brilliant - the emotion, the struggle of the character

I loved this story it drew me in. Demon grabbed my heart, for all the kids who've suffered from neglect, abuse, and the foster care system.

Story
Everyone expected Violet Sorrengail to die during her first year at Basgiath War College-Violet included. But Threshing was only the first impossible test meant to weed out the weak-willed, the unworthy, and the unlucky. Now the real training begins, and Violet’s already wondering how she’ll get through. It’s not just that it’s grueling and maliciously brutal, or even that it’s designed to stretch the riders’ capacity for pain beyond endurance. It’s the new vice commandant, who’s made it his personal mission to teach Violet exactly how powerless she is–unless she betrays the man she loves.

Story
Biblical womanhood - the belief that God designed women to be submissive wives, virtuous mothers, and joyful homemakers - pervades North American Christianity. From choices about careers to roles in local churches to relationship dynamics, this belief shapes the everyday lives of evangelical women. Yet biblical womanhood isn't biblical, says Baylor University historian Beth Allison Barr. It was born in a series of clearly definable historical moments.

The answer to why . . .

I have felt for a long time that the evangelical church in America has been getting it wrong. I remembering arguing with a girlfriend as we walked about the new church I was attending (that was 12 years ago) and that they allowed women to preach from the pulpit. I tried pointing out historical context. she held firm to the inspired word and it is infallible .

I understand better how the churches I grew up in didn't look at the underlying theme but used it literally to cling to old ideas of God. I have a better understanding of why Jesus happened when he did (because it is going to take a long time for this to change) How we are still trying to grasp the new concepts Jesus taught. Connecting with God and treating our fellow humans with love and compassion.

I loved listening to this book. Halfway through I realized it was like listening to a parent read me a Bible story. although I know it's based on the Bible the story is embellished but still enjoyable.
