Narration is a distraction
Reviewed: 11-12-24
Great story. The narration is so distracting that I really think they should consider rerecording this one with a different narrator. I wanted to listen to the series again, and I love this story. The narration, especially the Scottish accents and the kids are difficult to listen to. I will say that I increased the speed to 1.2 or 1.5 and that made it a little better. I'm sure the narrator is great, but I don't think this was her style of book.

Story
Amateur inventor Kester Barrington prefers the peace and quiet of his estate to the bustle of Society. But when his tight-knit group of friends, the Gents, descends on Livingsley Hall for their annual gathering, he stoically joins in their activities. It all seems exhausting - until an unexpected addition to the party catches his eye: his new neighbor, the lovely Violet. Violet Ridley longs to make friends in this new corner of the country, but her family’s fortune was made through investments rather than inheritance, and Society can be fickle.

So much better than the first book
Reviewed: 12-27-23
I almost did not listen to this book, because I disliked the first novel. I am glad I listened to this one. To me the characters are so much more developed, and the narrator's voices for these characters were less grating than the first novel.

Usually love the author, but I skipped some at the end. The narrator did not fit the story, and Julia just seemed to feel sorry for herself the entire book.

Story
Jase Foster is as loyal and committed as a friend can get - when it comes to the guys, that is. But with women he keeps it casual and experiences what one would call a "high turnover rate". Emily Klein is beautiful and confident...and has mile-long legs that have been strutting in and out of Jase's life since adolescence, leaving a wake of destruction. As they get paired up time after time as the best man and maid of honor in the upcoming nuptials of all of their best friends, Emily and Jase find their mutual resentment simmering just beneath the surface.

Maybe, but not for me
Reviewed: 12-01-23
I think I was expecting something light and maybe a little steamy, but I felt like the book was long and somewhat forced. The conflicts seemed too drawn out for what they were. I also felt like I ended up on the wrong side of an argument a few times when the author clearly wanted you to take sides. I just don't think it was for me.

Difficult to Finish

I don't know if it was the narrator or the main characters that I did not like. I couldn't picture the characters how they were described in the book. I didn't care for the relationship between the main characters. Maybe I just couldn't see that relationship working, because the main characters always were finding new ways to be jerks to on another. Yes, they apologized to each other, but still. The whole thing felt a little toxic to me.

Story
Raina Bretton is a rag woman in London's East End when a handsome stranger appears in a dank alley and offers her a glittering smile and a chance for adventure. Rothburne Abbey has a unique position for her, one that will take her away from her hardscrabble life and give her a chance to be a lady. Things she could only dream of might be coming true. But some dreams turn out to be nightmares. Though Raina has traded squalor for silk and satin, something about the abbey is deeply unsettling.

I wanted to like it
Reviewed: 01-07-21
This was not my favorite book. I wanted to like it, because I love historic romance/mysteries. I am not sure if it was the narration or the story, but I found myself wishing it would move along. It does have religious content, which I am not opposed to in any way, but the delivery of the religious message felt like it was crammed in the last part of the book. To me, discovering who she was changed the tone of the main character too much. It felt like she didn't so much discover herself or who she was with God, but became just a vehicle for the religious message. It was not terrible, but I am glad it was included and not something I used a credit on.

I really liked the book and the narrator. I was a little unsure after reading some of the reviews, but I think I liked it better than the first one. I didn't think there was that much sex in it. There were sexual topics and there was sexual tension between the main characters, but at no point were there any "sex scenes". To me it definitely did not cross over into romance novel territory. Love how oblivious Veronica is sometimes, in spite of how smart she is.

Not my favorite narrator.
Reviewed: 02-18-18
Liked the story. I did not like it as well as the Collector series. Also, I should have read the Darkness series first. I was a little lost in the beginning. The audio seemed off. It sounded almost like it had been sped up. I even slowed down the playback a little. That made it a little easier to listen to. But still not my favorite narrator.
