About this listen

Nottinghamshire, 1785

Julia Cummings has long been acquainted with loss - her mother, her brother, her sister, her friend, all gone too soon. But the loss that pushed her grief to the limit as a young girl was that of her best friend, Lucas Jonquil, who abandoned her without looking back. Now, eight years later, Lucas has returned to Lampton Park, and Julia has steeled herself - she will never forgive the man who broke her heart.

After losing too many of his friends and family to early deaths, Lucas vowed to live life to the fullest. And after traversing the world, he has returned from his adventures to find his family and home as he left them - except for Julia. The little girl he left behind has blossomed into a captivating lady, a lady who makes it clear she despises him. With little hope of reconciliation, the former friends are blindsided when their parents make a shocking announcement.

Lucas and Julia have been betrothed without their knowledge and are to marry immediately. Now Lucas must rely on the help of his closest friends to win the heart of a lady who loathes him - a lady he’s coming to love more deeply every day.

Please stop using this narrator for romance novels. PLEASE.

The story is positively, absolutely, 1000% fabulous.

The narration is the only reason I knocked off some stars. To be clear, the narrator reads well, but does NOT have a voice for a moving romance story. I have listened to two others of Ms. Eden’s books with this same narrator, because I do better with immersion reading (ADHD). Her voice took away from the raw, deep emotion of those stories. I decided I would try one last time with this book. I had to turn it off because it became extraordinarily painful. This story, as well as most romance, are stories regarding those in their younger years. So the stories are written with youthful passion and emotion. Beautifully so. Unfortunately, this narrator sounds like a tired elderly person which, as you might imagine, completely ruins the mood. With most other narrators, I get butterflies and fully deeply engaged with the characters. If you want that experience, don’t get this narrator for this genre. She reads well, but it NEEDS to be for something else. I won’t buy anything else she reads that is romance.

Amazing!!!

I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to into a book of characters that went back a generation but I was so pleasantly surprised and am really looking forward to the others in this series. What a fantastic and lovable group of Gentlemen. ❤️

A cute story

I liked the "gents to the rescue" idea. In my opinion, the book should have been read by a British English speaker though, would have enjoyed that more.

I can't handle Julia

Usually love the author, but I skipped some at the end. The narrator did not fit the story, and Julia just seemed to feel sorry for herself the entire book.

Very sweet!

Very sweet story! I loved all the Gents! The story lagged a little towards the end but ended well all the same.

Narration/Story teview

Narrator uses too childlike a voice for Julia. It became a bit annoying. Otherwise I always enjoy this narrator's work having listened to several of her previous narrations.
Story: Always love Sarah Eden's writing! However, this plot seemed mainly about Julia complaining a lot or possibly feeling sorry for herself. I expected a much stronger protagonist.

It's wonderful to see how some Sarah's characters.

Despite knowing that things would work out, (far too many books in their future) there was still a sense of urgency, uncertainty, and feelings dashed.
Bravo for a wonderful prequel.

Tender and Sweet

In an era where arranged marriages weren’t uncommon this book takes two people from the awkward, distrustful, hurting beginning to a beautiful marriage by the end of the book.
