About this listen

Nottinghamshire, 1785

Julia Cummings has long been acquainted with loss - her mother, her brother, her sister, her friend, all gone too soon. But the loss that pushed her grief to the limit as a young girl was that of her best friend, Lucas Jonquil, who abandoned her without looking back. Now, eight years later, Lucas has returned to Lampton Park, and Julia has steeled herself - she will never forgive the man who broke her heart.

After losing too many of his friends and family to early deaths, Lucas vowed to live life to the fullest. And after traversing the world, he has returned from his adventures to find his family and home as he left them - except for Julia. The little girl he left behind has blossomed into a captivating lady, a lady who makes it clear she despises him. With little hope of reconciliation, the former friends are blindsided when their parents make a shocking announcement.

Lucas and Julia have been betrothed without their knowledge and are to marry immediately. Now Lucas must rely on the help of his closest friends to win the heart of a lady who loathes him - a lady he’s coming to love more deeply every day.

I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to into a book of characters that went back a generation but I was so pleasantly surprised and am really looking forward to the others in this series. What a fantastic and lovable group of Gentlemen. ❤️

Amazing!!!

Very sweet story! I loved all the Gents! The story lagged a little towards the end but ended well all the same.

Narrator uses too childlike a voice for Julia. It became a bit annoying. Otherwise I always enjoy this narrator's work having listened to several of her previous narrations.
Story: Always love Sarah Eden's writing! However, this plot seemed mainly about Julia complaining a lot or possibly feeling sorry for herself. I expected a much stronger protagonist.

Despite knowing that things would work out, (far too many books in their future) there was still a sense of urgency, uncertainty, and feelings dashed.
Bravo for a wonderful prequel.

It's wonderful to see how some Sarah's characters.

In an era where arranged marriages weren’t uncommon this book takes two people from the awkward, distrustful, hurting beginning to a beautiful marriage by the end of the book.

Loved this from start to finish! I found myself laughing out loud and falling in love with all of the characters.... especially the Gents!

LOVE THIS BOOK SO MUCH!

I liked the "gents to the rescue" idea. In my opinion, the book should have been read by a British English speaker though, would have enjoyed that more.

A cute story

Usually love the author, but I skipped some at the end. The narrator did not fit the story, and Julia just seemed to feel sorry for herself the entire book.

I can't handle Julia

I am so sorry but the narrator made the female lead sound like a whiny, petulant child. I almost never leave a bad review but I almost turned it off so many times.
It’s unfortunate because I want to know what happens to the rest of the Gents but I cannot abide this narrator.

Good story but pitiful narration

I connected with the FMC on so many levels. Honestly, I think this book has been a bit of a healing experience for me and the revelation she comes to in the end hit me like a train. Another amazing book from Sarah M. Eden.

I really appreciated how the author handled the FMC’s feelings of abandonment. So often it seems to me like abandoned characters in books come across as whiny, clingy, or completely shut off, but not here. This author shows the real back and forth between fear and happiness, between feeling the need to strengthen walls to feel safe and yet wanting to break them down to feel alive.

Oof.
